"We arrived and followed the accommodation details to find nobody about and had to call at a local bungalow for some assistance and was met with a less than warm welcome. Once we got directions to the house we found the house to be anything but clean, the oven, baking trays and utensils had to be cleaned before we could use anything, after a 6 hour drive from Manchester this wasn’t the perfect start to our holiday! The house seemed to be covered in a fine layer of dust, it was like finding ourselves in a scene from Great Expectations. My bedroom drawer was so dusty I didn’t unpack, the carpet was littered with dried grass, My daughter, who fortunately is a adult, opened a bedroom drawer to find dirty tissues and medication in it, there was a good collection of butter beans in the kitchen and no key for the front door so the only key to the kitchen had to be shared between 4 adults. Apparently you don’t need to lock the door but can leave it unlocked but a front door key isn’t a lot to ask for surely? For a house that could sleep 8 adults we could only find 2 breakfast bowls, although the kitchen did have a food mixer. Rather than a bathroom blind or set of curtains we had a rather strange tartan and sequinned curtain arrangement pinned up with safety pins, the downstairs bathroom smelt awful, we had a springer spaniel sat on the picnic bench and noticed the glass door on the wood burner was broke, thankfully we didn’t have to use it.On the plus side the beds were comfy and the beach was great for the dogs. We originally booked another property on the estate but was “upgraded” to this one, we made the most of the area, can recommend the village dog friendly cafe and Kames hotel and the Oystercatcher pub at Otter Ferry, the Kames village store has good supplies but the whole week was let down by a shabby cluttered dusty house. We did find the vintage hoover on the last day and that might explain why every rug and cushion is covered in dust.I had a strange feeling that this wasn’t actually a holiday rent at all but someone’s house who isn’t too hot on housekeeping! To say I am disappointed is a understatement."

"Firstly, the cottage was clean, well equipped and comfortable. Thoughtful of the owner to leave milk, bread, juice for our arrival, which was greatly appreciated . However, we were disappointed that the cottage is in a housing estate surrounded by other properties - we did not realise that when we booked. It is near the Crinal Canal, but has no view. The back of the property has a small area of grass, not that well maintained, along with a shared access path between the terrace of properties it is set in, so no private area to sit out - that also backs onto a fairly busy (relatively busy for the area) road. The front of the property has a block paved driveway which was fine for parking but again as it is overlooked it wasn't suitable to sit out. The major problem, however, was that the view from the sitting room was onto what appeared to be wasteland. The owner came to apologise for the view and told us that trees had been cut down the week before, without any notice to the residents, and this left what looked like a bomb crater - such a shame for everyone living there. The surrounding area is lovely and we travelled to some beautiful places, but we were expecting that the cottage setting would be a bit more picturesque. If you purely wanted a comfortable base to travel away from every day this cottage may be fine, but if your holiday includes wanting to have a day or so just kicking back I'm not sure this would be suitable."

"We thought the cottage itself was excellent. All the amenities were fantastic. Big rooms excellent little touches such as a little welcome pack. The caretaker, who was extremely helpful, got us a freezer which was great. The games room was an excellent amenity which we used on a regular basis. The grounds were beautiful with walks right on the doorstep. My only complaint was with Scottish Country Cottages. The description they gave was not correct. It stated that there was a log burner and even said that logs were provided. There was, and never has been a log burner in that cottage. This was confirmed by the caretaker. I was not happy as we always specify that we want an open fire, so you can imagine my disappointment when we found out that there wasn’t one. Don’t get me wrong, it was warm, but the charm for us is an open fire. This is in no way a reflection on the Byre as I stated the cottage was beautiful. However, the description was not correct and I feel very let down. Consequently I will not book with them again and if I want to go to Home Farm Cottages I will book directly with them."

"We had a fab time at S23212. The location and scenery is nothing short of stunning. The house was nice and overall very comfortable. And the owner struck a good balance of being available and friendly, whilst giving us total privacy. Our main point of feedback is on equipment. The living areas could do with some updating. The TV was difficult to work and placed too high on the wall to watch comfortably. Having a bath proved impossible due to lack of flow in the hot water. There were no basics provided on our arrival (e.g. coffee, milk, bread, salt, washing up tablets for the dishwasher, washing powder for the washing machine were all missing - we had to go buy all of these things for ourselves). We even had to ask for towels on our arrival and were given one each. We have booked many cottages over the years through agency and airbnb and basic amenities have always been provided. Usually even the first batch of logs are provided. Given the price of S23212 we would have expected the same here."

"This is a wonderful cottage to spend a week in - winter or summer. With the usual mixed bag of Scottish weather - sun, rain and snow - the cottage could not be faulted. The sitting room was a great place to spend a cosy evening playing board games in front of the woodburner, and the dining room made for some great family evenings. The decor was perfect - full of character and most importantly, comfortable. The situation was charming, with ducks, geese, piglets and a friendly mob of spaniels always ready for a game. The owner welcomed us with home produced eggs, bacon and sausages on our first morning, but after that we were left our privacy and encouraged to roam anywhere on the estate we wanted. This is the sixth time we have spent Easter in Scotland and this cottage ticks all the boxes - tv and wifi for younger members of the party, freedom for the dogs to roam and peace and tranquility for the adults."
