"I don’t mind old or worn. A new chair can sit just as comfortably as an old chair, but when it comes to hygiene, only one way will do. The house needs a decent spring clean and the contents needs to be reviewed. Many of the dining room chairs were very rickety and could break at any moment. Other specific issues: - Main bathroom’s bath had soap scum ring all around the bath with 3 short black curly hair in it. - The two yellow cups in the main bathroom was covered in toothpaste as well as the sink. - The taps in both bathroom sinks had toothpaste splatter. - In the kitchen behind the breadtin next to the Aga, was a piece of food, looked like a small tomato that was shrivelling up. - Whomever unpacked the dishwasher last must have had greasy/oily hands, as the “clean” plates in the cupboard had greasy fingerprints all over them. - The en-suite bathroom window’s curtain is covered in black mold. - The table covering in the dining room had a streak of what looked like egg yolk running down the side of it. - Many of the dishes in the top right hand drawer next to the electric cooktop, has cracks in them (the red one, one of the blue spotty ones and many other small ones.) We did not use these, in case they broke. - We could not get any of the radiators upstairs to turn on, no matter how high we turned the heat. - Neither of the towel bars in the bathrooms ever switched on. - We were not cold upstairs as thankfully the floorboards had so many gaps the heat from down stairs made its way up. - The fridge is dirty with bits of food remains sprinkled throughout. - The master bedroom’s bed lost one of its slats when my husband sat down to tie his shoes. - The bed in one of the kids’ rooms (pink room with only one bed) also dropped a slat. We got there early and the housekeeper was very kind to allow us in as she was finishing the kitchen floor. She made us a cup of tea and it certainly was much appreciated. We would love to stay at this cottage again. Great location! It is spacious and the woods out back a real treat for the kids, but alas it needs some major cleaning and a good overall in its contents. Not sure if all Sykes’ cottages are in this state. Rented twice from Classic Cottages before and their cottages were spotless (so it can be done)."

"The best thing about this cottage is its location. Quiet and secluded with easy access to lots to open countryside. If you have a dog to walk this is the place to come. Very pleasantly surprised by the Surrey Hills, beautiful and much more rural than we anticipated. Very comfortable beds and high quality linen. Other areas all furnished to a good standard. Has useable Wi-Fi speed wise but capacity is limited (need to check if it said that in the booking details) which restricts some of the applications - but its in such a great location that you should be out most of the time anyway!! Miles from anything if you decide that you want some extra shopping so plan ahead. A bit expensive compared with others we have stayed at, perhaps that's the south of England for you? Features electric storage heaters so all the usual controllability issues that come with them."

"Lovely location with lots of walks from the doorstep. Very helpful and friendly owners. Unfortunately the cottage is quite tired. Many of the doors are poorly fitting. Light bulbs blown with no replacements. Few plug sockets to plug chargers etc. Extra side table lamp in the lounge would have been useful but no socket to plug it into. Front bedroom bed could do with a proper mattress as it was very uncomfortable. Occasional dining table in the kitchen could realistically only sit 2 people without it having to be moved into the lounge. Couldn't find any instructions on the electrical appliances which became hit and miss on how the hob/TV/DVD operated. Don't get me wrong this is a nice place to stay but with a small amount of money spent and a bit of TLC could be a "great" place to stay."

"We loved the cottage and it is in a lovely setting. Workmanship is top notch and the addition of slippers for guests in order that floors are saved is a brilliant idea (and cozy). Everything worked flawlessly. A big plus is that the owner is extremely helpful and deeply knowledgeable about the area. Drawbacks are that the loo is very cold in cold weather and the tub/shower err in that direction as well. A real improvement would be made with the addition of a dryer to go with the wonderful washing machine. In very rainy muddy weather without a dryer, the cottage quickly runs out of over the door and hotrail space. Space is at a premium in the cottage but perhaps some thought could be given to clothes hanging. Dogs are welcome and ours loved it."

"Location was excellent for the dog walking. Parking was a problem - couldn't park directly outside the property. Dog mess from local dogs running through the garden and car park unpleasant. Step up to cottage was too high both into the garden and up to the main cottage. Drill bit and old boxed iron left lying on the top of the water butt and used bottle of what looked like oil left lying. Dining was a challenge trying to seat 4 people in the kitchen. We moved the table into the lounge area so we could be seated and had to move settees to accommodate this. General feel of the property was unkempt and could do with a bit of TLC. Information about locality and recycling/ disposal of waste would have been useful."
