    Holiday Cottages in Snowdonia

Snowdonia National Park has so much to offer, from stunning natural landmarks to quaint and picturesque villages, as well as, of course, the majestic peak of Mount Snowdon, which you can actually scale by railway if you don’t fancy the walk! This amazing region is perfect for a cottage holiday and you’ll find some stunning holiday cottages in Snowdonia, whether you’re looking for a spacious lodge for large groups of people, or something small and cosy for a romantic escape.

If you’re looking for a relaxing and hassle free holiday, where you maintain complete control over everything, then you can’t beat a cottage holiday. Self-catered accommodation that’s full of home comforts, Snowdonia holiday cottages have all the ingredients for an unforgettable break in the countryside including some really amazing locations, close to beautiful towns and villages, hiking trails and cycling paths.

What to see on your Snowdonia cottage holiday

Snowdonia National Park is, of course, home to the tallest mountain in Wales, Snowdonia. The climb isn’t too challenging, but you’ll definitely feel a sense of achievement when you reach the top! If you don’t fancy the arduous climb you can actually reach the top via Snowdon Mountain Railways, is actually the only rack and pinion railway in the whole UK.

This beautiful National Park is home to some really stunning towns and villages. Certainly one of the most unique is the village of Portmeirion. Built in an Italian style, visiting Portmeirion is like visiting the Mediterranean (admittedly it helps if the sun’s out!) and is well worth stopping by if you’re in the area. Portmeirion was famously the setting of the hit ‘60s science fiction show The Prisoner, and with its idiosyncratic style it’s easy to see why.

Planning some adventuring whilst on holiday in Snowdonia? Then check out our guide to Cave Exploration in the UK, which includes the hidden world beneath the mountains of Snowdonia.

As well as charming villages and beautiful scenery, Snowdonia is steeped in history. Slate minding was one of the biggest industries in the area, and while the mines and quarries have now closed, many have been converted into fascinating museums, such as the National Slate Museum at Gilfach Ddu.

If you’re looking to holiday in the beautiful region of Snowdonia, you’ll find lots of great holiday cottages in Snowdonia to choose from, from charming former mining cottages to larger spacious modern properties filled with home comforts.

The cottage is in a nice location.

It is in a quiet lane. No parking on that street for this cottage? But other cottages park on the street Parking is difficult, but a permit is provided. This didn't work well for us as my mom is 80 so there was a lot of moving of the car to make sure she didn't have to walk too far. Cottage was well equipped in the kitchen. Has everything you need. Bedroom with bunk bed was good and comfortable. Main bedroom was clean but bed was very uncomfortable. You can feel slats of bed through mattress. Bathroom is small but clean. Shower didn't work well for my 6foot3 husband. He couldn't stand up straight in the shower. Floors downstairs on arrival weren't cleaned well but overall was clean. May need the rug in living room cleaning as smelt of dogs. I personally moved it so my dogs didn't wee on it to cover other smells. Garden is small but useable. Shame there was no access to shared larger garden. Harlech is quiet. Has a few shops and chemist. No general store. Has Indian, Chinese and chip shop but only open certain days. Café on main square was really nice and did really good hot chocolate. Would we stay again? Probably not as not really suitable for our needs. Information folder in cottage needs a complete overhaul. Not been updated for a great deal of time. It looks as though other users of the cottage have done updates themselves!

The cottage had everything we needed.

The heating was modern and got the cottage cosy at the end of a cold day out. The place was well kept and in good order. The piano/organ was delightful! The rooms were big enough for 2 and there was enough storage for the week. The check in system was simple. It was well located, in walking distance from 2 supermarkets and a pub. It was just right for our needs (2 adults and 2 primary aged children). The main downside was the cleanliness of the linen. We emailed the owner and the same day fresh linen was provided (flat sheets, towel and tea towels). Unfortunately on the last day we discovered the main bed flat sheet had been dirty from the start too (we stripped the bed and found dirt on it in a place we hadn't slept). The electric shower in the ensuite had a quirk where it dropped power and went cold before coming back burning hot. It scalded our 10 year old on the second night so we had to take extra care for the rest of the holiday. Parking was tricky with a 4x4 sized car but this was clear when we booked so that's the chance we took.

The first thing we noticed when we arrived was just how close the next door neighbour's property is and that they overlooked where we were staying. However this was never really an issue except on the day of our arrival (which was also the day of the Queen's funeral) when they were playing very loud music which was quite upsetting especially because after a 7 hour drive to get there all we wanted was to enjoy a quiet drink next to the babbling stream. Another matter that surprised us was the steep drive down to the house. We were warned about this by the owner just prior to the holiday commencing so we elected to take our 4x4 SUV rather than our estate car. And I'm so glad we did because the estate car would easily have bottomed out and grounded for sure. However, none of these were a major issue and certainly never detracted nor spoiled our break in any way. in fact overall we had a really fabulous stay and loved everything about the cottage which is a credit to the owners. Thank you.

The cottage was listed as being 10mins walk from the beach.

However it was actually 10mins walk down very steep roads then, 15 mins walk through the golf course and sand dunes. The walk back up was challenging unless you are super fit. One of the roads to the beach bears a sign saying "The Steepest Street in the World" and has a gradient of 37.5. The closest convenience store and the pub had closed down and the restaurants and takeways in Harlech were not open every day so it was necessary to drive somewhere to eat. The cottage was comfortable but in need of some refurbishment and there was no welcome pack or anything like that. There was some sketchy information about the local area but more detail would have been helpful if, like ourselves, you are new to the area. There was no visitors book with tips and info from previous guests. Although we wouldn't stay in Harlech again due to the lack of amenities, we would definitely visit the area again.

We chose this property because there are 2, off road parking places and 2 bedrooms.

It is a delightful house with a small garden at the front and a decked area out the back. The house is very clean and well equipped. The beds are comfortable and the decor is tastefully quirky. A small shop just up the road sells essentials and there are supermarkets in Conwy. Negatives: There is very little information about the TV and the cooker. We struggled to get the grill in the small oven to do what we wanted and it took a lot of trial and error to get “live TV”. Sykes’s instructions said that we should park in the spaces marked No “2” but we parked in spaces numbered “3” to avoid conflict with the person who lives at No 2. Other than these minor issues it’s a great, quiet accommodation.

    Things to do near Snowdonia

    • Natural Landmark Natural Landmark
    Snowdonia National Park
Snowdonia National Park is a spectacular area, made up of mountains and glacial landforms popular with hikers. The park's historic Snowdon Mountain Railway climbs to the summit of Wales's highest mountain, Mount Snowdon, offering views across the sea to Ireland.

    Frequent questions

    • Is Snowdonia free to visit?

Yes, Snowdonia National Park in Wales is generally free to visit. The park itself is open to the public, and you can explore its natural beauty, hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints without an admission fee. However, there might be some specific attractions or facilities within the park that require a fee, such as parking at certain trailheads, visitor centres, guided tours, or activities like the Snowdon Mountain Railway.

    • How many days do you need for Snowdonia?

The ideal duration for a visit to Snowdonia National Park depends on your interests and the activities you plan to undertake. To enjoy some of the popular hiking trails, take in the breathtaking landscapes, and explore the area, a stay of 2 to 4 days would provide a good balance. This timeframe allows you to experience the beauty of the park without feeling rushed.

    • What is the best month to visit Snowdonia?

The best months to visit Snowdonia National Park are typically from late spring to early autumn, specifically May to September. During this period, the weather is generally milder, the days are longer, and the park's natural beauty is at its peak with blooming flora and clear hiking paths. However, keep in mind that weather in mountainous regions can be unpredictable, so it's wise to be prepared for various conditions regardless of the season.

    • Can you just walk up Snowdon?

Yes, you can walk up Snowdon, the highest mountain in Snowdonia National Park and in Wales. There are several hiking trails leading to the summit, ranging in difficulty and length. The most popular route is the Llanberis Path, which is relatively gradual (thus making it the longest) and follows the mountain railway up the summit. However, even though it's considered a "walk," it's important to be prepared with appropriate clothing, footwear, and supplies, as the weather conditions can change quickly, especially at higher elevations. Whichever route you opt for, be aware that it involves a demanding 5 to 8-hour hike with limited protection from the elements.
