What our customers say about their holidays

    • Janet - Verified booking

We hadn’t thought about a holiday in this area of the U.

      K. and usually go camping at this time of year. Most places were reported to be very busy this year due to COVID 19 restrictions, so we booked this cottage. The cottage itself was very comfortable and clean and Lorraine, the owner was very welcoming and we were not disappointed. The cottage is ideal for couples. There is a shared courtyard and garden which has the sun all day and is very tranquil. We brought our bicycles and were able to park them undercover in the covered barn. We did not use the car at all during our stay and thoroughly explored the Vale of Glamorgan, the country single track lanes were very quiet and ideal for cycling. We visited Cowbridge and the Physic garden with medicinal plants from the 18th century, Llantwit Major and it’s dramatic beach. We travelled along the coastline to St Donat’s past Atlantic College where the likes of Charlie Chaplin and John F Kennedy stayed, visited Dunraven Castle, Ogmore by Sea (a peaceful spot when we visited, but made headlines due to a mass brawl post-Lockdown), Ogmore Castle, Ewenny Priory, Merthyr Mawr Warren, which is a beautiful natural area and climbed the Big Dipper (the second largest sandune in Europe), Porthkerry Country Park, Barry and Barry Island (the day before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge). The closest beach is Monknash, a rocky beach with a footpath and a walk to get down to it, but it is well worth the effort. We also enjoyed watching the kart racing at Llandow Circuit nearby. Had we have been there longer, we would have perhaps visited Cardiff and Penarth. It was lovely to return to the cottage after a busy day sightseeing. The only downside for us was a slightly unstable internet connection and poor phone signal at times, but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment.

On arrival we (my husband and I) were welcomed by Caris who showed us around the lodge, which is absolutely immaculate.

Both Caris and Kerry are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We took along our two small dogs, which again were made very welcome and quickly made friends with the pugs and the beautiful Maremma sheepdog, Lexi, who although she towered over our little dogs, became a great favourite with them both! We only had one slight upset during the week we stayed there, and that was on Tuesday we returned to the lodge to find the family's French Bulldogs running loose, we were assured by Caris that they were all friendly, so we went through the gate with our two dogs. Unfortunately, both our dogs were attacked by two of the French Bulldogs, we quickly picked up our dogs, but one of the French Bulldogs continued to jump up,pulling on our dogs tail. Once Caris realised what was happening, she rounded her dogs up and took them back to their kennels. Both Kerry and Caris have apologised to us, which of course we accept, but unfortunately, since it happened, our smallest dog became very wary of going out of the lodge door, nervous of what dogs were around. We have been reassured that Kerry is going to make a seperate area that his dogs can exercise in future, so this will not happen to future guests, and it will not stop us staying there again.

Not clearly signed where the cottage was so was driving around trying to find it.

Once arrived the owner never realised we had arrived. After owner saw us she gave us a guided tour. Once we where all in, the kids saw soo many spider webs and big spiders. Firstly we had to move them but everywhere we turned there was another spider and another web. Whether it be in the sealing corners or floor corners. Behind bedside tables ontop of wardrobes...everywhere. There where also woodlice inside the property. Ants outside the front entrance and all over the recycling bags. There was lots of dust ontop of the books with webs, on the bathroom heater and behind the sink taps. Had to ask for WiFi password. Having 4 young kids not doing as they where told. Trying to pack and sort house put to how it was, we got late by 30 minutes and the owner was not happy. What she said was 'did you forget the departure time was 10am' to which I replied 'no but having 4 kids it was difficult'. The house was empty all we had to do was put the bags in the car. Not once did she ask how our stay was? or say have a safe journey home or did you enjoy your stay? They could have started one end instead of being abit grumpy!

We are a family of 4 with two small children (4&2) and came to enjoy South Wales with some friends.

We had a wonderful time on holiday here. The cottage is lovely and had everything we needed, it is conveniently located with the nearby town of Llantwit Major offering practical amenities and plenty of woods, beaches and castles in the area to explore. The family that operate the cottage are on site and are all lovely and helpful, great with the kids and gave us some great recommendations of places to visit all thew while ensuring our stay was going well (even offering one of the paddocks for me to set up my telescope, unfortunate I never had a clear enough sky for it). Some things we did if you are after ideas, in no particular order: Ogmore Beach, Ogmore Castlem Porthcawl beach and arcades, Forrest Fawr, Southerndown Beach and Dunraven bay/castle. Some of the other stuff we wanted to do was closed due to Covid but there was more than enough to exhaust the kids on a daily basis. We look forward to returning to enjoy more of this wonderful slice of the country and we'd certainly stay here again when we do return. Thank you for a great stay!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Caner Bach Lodge while I was working in the nearby area.

I was immediately impressed by the friendliness and warmth of the owners, Carys and Kerry. They made us feel welcome from the moment I arrived, and even provided essentials such as bread, milk, and toiletries. The cottage itself was clean, cozy, and well-equipped. Everything we needed for a comfortable stay was provided. The cottage is also located on a working farm, so I enjoyed seeing the animals and taking walks in the surrounding fields or nearby beaches. The cottage and owners are very dog-friendly, so I was able to bring my assistance dog along with me. Carys and Kerry's own dogs and other animals were kept separate from us, but they were happy to let us see them if we were interested. Luna? is a lovely big dog! Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Caner Bach Lodge. The owners are friendly and welcoming, the cottage is clean and cozy, and the location is perfect for those who want to relax and unwind in a rural setting. I would highly recommend Caner Bach Lodge to anyone looking for a dog-friendly cottage getaway in South Wales.
