What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sara - Verified booking

Had the most brilliant family holiday.

we had originally booked another property which the owner withdrew at the last minute leaving us limited time to book and very limited options. The Bothy way exceeded our expectations. We have rented several properties in the past and this was up there with the best. We are a mixed group of four generations spanning 10 months to 83 years old plus dogs. The Bothy accommodated us perfectly - it is clean spacious and well furnished with lovely comfy beds. We were concerned regarding the lack of en-suite accommodation but the design and layout worked perfectly for us. The baths are amazing and the towels plentiful and good quality. The kitchen was perfection - by far the best equipped we have used outstanding quality and everything covered. Ample space to store our mega online shop - we cook for the week - and the bonus of the extra fridge in the snug was perfect for drinks. The enclosed garden was perfect for the dogs and ample parking for our 5 cars. The hot tub was used daily despite the inclement weather and the provision of towels for this was a lovely touch. The garage housing the table tennis table could easily be further developed to create a full games room or even better an indoor pool. Shutlingsloe seen clearly from the garden is a lovely albeit challenging climb which we completed in under two hours door to door. The nearby family run children’s farm and ice cream parlour is also well worth the visit. The tea room has a lovely inexpensive menu. Very few negatives and none that affected the holiday: There are several small steps and level changes throughout which would be difficult for young children and elderly/disabled. The bin in the kitchen needs rethinking it is so impractical and much too tall for any bin liners A coffee maker would be a welcome addition The property is difficult to find in the dark as the sat nav only works to just outside the village. The area feels quite remote which suited us although Buxton is an easy 15 minute drive. The Tesco driver struggled to locate us to deliver our food order and was unable to connect by mobile due to the poor signal. Audrey who was our Property contact regarding the booking was responsive and very helpful. Would fully recommend the Bothy and would definitely consider a return visit.

      Lovely stay at The Bothy.

Audrey made us feel very welcome with a few essentials, tickets for Knowsley Safari and a sweet birthday card for my 40th. We went to the local distillery for gin tasting which was excellent and made the most of the local area for pubs and outdoor places to visit (like the caverns and Dovedale). Every single one of us struggled to find the house though so directions are tricky- I wouldn’t recommend in the dark! The Hot tub was lovely under the stars but really dirty by day 5. The water was ok but the hot tub itself was really slimy and far from clean round the edges. Beds were super comfy, we appreciated the thick curtains and black out blinds. The fire in the living room was cosy on an evening and the heating etc easy enough to use. The Wi-fi however- DO NOT expect to be able to watch anything apart from Free View. We couldn’t get anything like Netflix to work. Our phones struggled to connect aswell and were mostly on 4G despite being in the house. At a time like this (during Covid) I didn’t like the table cloth in the kitchen which can’t be removed. We struggled to clean it and keep it sanitised through the week. With two small kids it was a near impossible task. Overall though the house was well equipped, clean, and very homely. We enjoyed our stay.

Fabulous spacious well equipped cottage with panoramic views from every window.

The hosts were very attentive and always ready to answer any questions or for anything we needed even kindly leaving us biscuits when we arrived. The gardens are well attended with beautiful luscious green grass with plenty of outdoor chairs. The games room provided extra space and entertainment even in wet weather. For our young family being on a working farm was very exciting. Farm tractors up and down the farm Lane, cows, calves and lambs on the fields. It was a dream holiday being in the midst of it all. The cottage is on a little Lane and our children were able to ride their bikes half a mile down to a cattle grid without the worry of traffic. The area is also brilliant with abundance of activities for various different ages, very close to alton towers, less than 10 minutes drive to tittesworth reservoir, a stunning place to do canoeing and paddle boarding, beautiful walks, and so much more. Whilst it is in rural location leek town is just a short drive, and in the quant town of leek you'll find any shop you need. Highly recommend a holiday at this amazing cottage. And my advice is to ignore any negative feedback below, for us being on a working farm is a massive bonus for a family holiday.

The accomodation was fine apart from the lack of internet which the details stated that it had.

The internet was virtually non existent and had I known this on looking to book a property then I would have looked elsewhere. The TV that is described as a Smart TV needs internet to act as such. Bearing in mind that the evenings were drawing in and weather turned out to be crap, then it spoiled our week away. I couldnt even use my laptop to browse or our phones as there was also poor phone signal. The landlady tried her best but you cant recify what isnt there. On arriving home I spoke to Sykes Cottages but they were no help and just stopped replying to me. My advice to them and to the owner either improve the internet or explain the facts on the site. As it stands it is blatant misrepresentation of the facts. Anybody considering booking this property and needs internet access then dont. Book somewhere else but if its through Sykes Cottages dont expect any help or redress from them. My advice is use another company

The house was great and the welcome package lovely and we all loved the hot tub.

The only problem we had was with the out dated directions. Every single group that drove to the property got lost. And it really stressed us out especially with kids and dogs in the car late at night. Some people where driving around for more than an hour. The directions are fine right up to the last little bit where the directions talk about finding a white gate with the name of the house on it. Well there are 3 white gates around crag hall and not one of them is the front entrance to the house. Plus the 'bothy' sign isn't visible because it's on the open brown gate which is pushed back out of the way. My two suggestions would be to maybe get the house name/sign put out on the side of the road where you can see it and please please, take of the bit about the white gate from your directions or paint the gate white. Apart from that we had a great holiday. Thanks
