What our customers say about their holidays

    • Gail - Verified booking

Location: excellent, in lovely grounds, great for sitting out in suitable weather, easy parking, ideal for walking out to the lagoons for birdwatching etc 1.

The woodburner: WARNING This is a health hazard. During wind in the "wrong" direction soot from the fire blows back through poorly sealed burner doors into the whole studio. On this occasion it was extreme filling the whole accommodation with acrid sooty smoke. The owners stated this happens if it is windy. They are clearly aware, there are no instructions on its use . A shrug of the shoulders by the owner is insufficient response. All of our belongings now have to be washed or wiped down as the smell is intolerable. A previous review states the blowback of smoke so they are aware as admitted. We could not tolerate this as it made my eyes swell and smart. We had to vacate halfway through our stay as the room state was unhealthy. It is difficult to get through ventilation due to the blackouts on the south side windows. There will be dangerous fumes always entering the room. This is carcinogenic. 2. There is no sprinkler system, fire alarm or CO monitor in such an enclosed studio space which should be mandatory. 3. The provision of 6 large books of Playboy by the bed together with walls covered in family pictures of breastfeeding, pregnancy ultrasound scans, baby feet, and general family children in swim costumes are also inappropriate. Such personal items should not be in a public rented space. 4.The Sofa needs replacing. 5. Insufficient utensils and dishes for self catering. 7. There are two large dogs in the grounds. The owner did bring them to introduce us & they are lovely but as dogs make me anxious I would have appreciated forewarning. Sykes do not inspect properties after an initial visit.

The house itself was clean and well equipped.

The wifi connection was poor and every hour or so buffered, meaning I could not watch on demand TV or use zoom. I would not recommend relying on the wifi if you want to work from there. I struggled with the parking clock. I could never get parking at the small Gosport parking area and had to change every 20 hrs between Cannon Street and St Thomas street. For stays of a few days I imagine this is fine, but for me having to every day move my car back and forwards was hugely annoying (and wasted 30 minutes every morning especially if i dont want to leave at 8am). It meant having to plan your car usage strategically: either parking just before closing to get a lie in (consequently parking and walking around a car park in the dark) or waking up early before the car park opens. This was not an enjoyable experience and felt like a hassle for a holiday. The property description should accurately state what free means i.e "free public parking for 20 hours each day - guests will have to move their car each day to a different car park due to the no return rules." The road directly out front is extremely busy and very noisy. This is fine if you are planning on not staying in during the day and definitely explains why children are not permitted at the house. Finally, whilst it says pet friendly, I would give caution, as the road out front is extremely busy and has a very small pedestrian pathway. I had to keep my dog on a very tight lead and step out in front first for safety.

We had a lovely stay at Starboard Light which is a cosy little cottage and perfect for two.

As per the description, there is no parking at the cottage but there was a parking disc provided and plenty of nearby car parks within a two minute walk. The only comment I would make is that pulling up outside in the lane to unload the car was not an option for us. Although it's a small road, it is busy and a main through route. It's also narrow and we felt we would have caused an obstruction if we stopped there. However, the Quay car park is close by and luckily we travel light. We had a short weekend stay and didn't actually use any of the kitchen facilities in the cottage as we ate out every day. There's a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants right on the doorstep. However, the kitchen looked to be well stocked with everything you would need. The bedroom and bathroom were gorgeous and the bed was so comfy. The shower was excellent and all the furniture and decor was lovely and homely. We would definitely consider a return visit.

The cottage was well presented and well equipped.

However, we experienced several unfortunate issues. We searched for the parking clock for ten minutes when we arrived and eventually found out that the cleaning staff had taken it with them so we had to rapidly unpack in the very narrow street and pay for overnight parking nearby. Then we had to wait in for the clock to be returned before we could go out to eat- not what you need after a long journey. When we at last retired we found that the bed had an ill fitting mattress topper on it as the mattress had certainly seen better days. This led to us giving up by Sunday morning and returning home then. Overall the cottage was clean but the windows were covered in perpetual condensation that however much was mopped up came back almost instantly. Of course this meant there was mould on the window sills. Worrying if you are an asthmatic. Perhaps this particular rent was more suited to summer visitors rather than a winter stay?

We have just spent 7 wonderful nights at swallow lodge .

From the moment we walked in to the time we left it was amazing. There was a welcome hamper for us when we arrived for which we were very grateful. The fit and Finnish and cleanliness is first class.the amount of equipment they have in there leaves you wanting for nothing as they have thought of everything you need for a lovely break .when we met nicky and roger they made us feel very welcome and are lovely people was really nice to meet them .knowing they are just next door should you need anything. Milford is a lovely place and was central for all the places we visited ,we ate out at smugglers and the lazy lion both very good ,a shop, fish and chip shop within a 5 min walk .we would definitely recommend swallow lodge for a nice relaxing break book with confidence its amazing.we have booked many places with Sykes over the years and never had a bad one yet but this one is up there with the best .
