What our customers say about their holidays

    • Amy - Verified booking

This is a lovely property, ideally situated for exploring Dorset and the New Forest.

Our boys and dog thoroughly enjoyed the spacious house and garden, in particular. The house was very comfortable & there was everything we needed & more in the kitchen. On our first day we found that the television in the snug didn’t work. It switched off intermittently & the next morning unfortunately did the same. The contact number given by Sykes was for a company that looks after the property on behalf of the owners. My husband left a message, but didn’t hear back so had to chase them up later in the day. We were told someone would go round to look at the television the following day. Having returned to the house we were unable to tell whether anyone had been in, so again rung that company. They said they spoke to the maintenance person who thought the tv probably needed replacing. They’d also spoken to the owners, who said they’d been there the previous week & it was working ok then. We were asked to video what happens to the television, which we did & this was emailed to that company again. We never heard back from them or the owners, so felt the duty of care was lacking. Having a second television wasn’t the end of the world, but it meant one room in the house couldn’t be used, as intended. Our biggest disappointment was in having to spend part of our holiday chasing up an issue & not getting it resolved. It would also have been nice to have heard from the owners at some point, even if only to apologise for the inconvenience. We understand that they aren’t local, so you lose an element of personal touch but at least this issue wasn’t anything major.

The house itself was clean and well equipped.

The wifi connection was poor and every hour or so buffered, meaning I could not watch on demand TV or use zoom. I would not recommend relying on the wifi if you want to work from there. I struggled with the parking clock. I could never get parking at the small Gosport parking area and had to change every 20 hrs between Cannon Street and St Thomas street. For stays of a few days I imagine this is fine, but for me having to every day move my car back and forwards was hugely annoying (and wasted 30 minutes every morning especially if i dont want to leave at 8am). It meant having to plan your car usage strategically: either parking just before closing to get a lie in (consequently parking and walking around a car park in the dark) or waking up early before the car park opens. This was not an enjoyable experience and felt like a hassle for a holiday. The property description should accurately state what free means i.e "free public parking for 20 hours each day - guests will have to move their car each day to a different car park due to the no return rules." The road directly out front is extremely busy and very noisy. This is fine if you are planning on not staying in during the day and definitely explains why children are not permitted at the house. Finally, whilst it says pet friendly, I would give caution, as the road out front is extremely busy and has a very small pedestrian pathway. I had to keep my dog on a very tight lead and step out in front first for safety.

The photography gave a misleading impression of the size of the property and garden it was smaller than we anticipated although we appreciated the extension.

Bedroom 2 with double bed was wedged against the wall, so no space to get out that side. There was not enough room to store bicycles as stated the garage was locked. The combination locks for the side gate and bike shed had seized and needed lubricating with WD40 and were still stiff to roll. The keysafe was difficult to operate and there were no instructions on how to close it once the key had been removed. The letter box kept falling off and although we tried screwing the nuts back on it repeatedly fell off. The non stick coating on the pans was badly worn and we didn't use them. The chrome lavatory brush handle had rusted. There was a shelf unit/cupboard in the bathroom which had broken and was incomplete. The shelves in the white cupboard in the bathroom had fallen down and needed fixing back in. Some pictures were loose in their frames. The bath was slippery because it didn't have a non slip base we bought a non slip mat. The dining room table was too high and the chairs too low. There was no instruction manual to reset the hot water, so some of us had cold showers. There was a loud drilling noise at night of unknown origin which could be heard in the 2nd bedroom and front lounge.

We had a lovely stay at Starboard Light which is a cosy little cottage and perfect for two.

As per the description, there is no parking at the cottage but there was a parking disc provided and plenty of nearby car parks within a two minute walk. The only comment I would make is that pulling up outside in the lane to unload the car was not an option for us. Although it's a small road, it is busy and a main through route. It's also narrow and we felt we would have caused an obstruction if we stopped there. However, the Quay car park is close by and luckily we travel light. We had a short weekend stay and didn't actually use any of the kitchen facilities in the cottage as we ate out every day. There's a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants right on the doorstep. However, the kitchen looked to be well stocked with everything you would need. The bedroom and bathroom were gorgeous and the bed was so comfy. The shower was excellent and all the furniture and decor was lovely and homely. We would definitely consider a return visit.

The cottage was well presented and well equipped.

However, we experienced several unfortunate issues. We searched for the parking clock for ten minutes when we arrived and eventually found out that the cleaning staff had taken it with them so we had to rapidly unpack in the very narrow street and pay for overnight parking nearby. Then we had to wait in for the clock to be returned before we could go out to eat- not what you need after a long journey. When we at last retired we found that the bed had an ill fitting mattress topper on it as the mattress had certainly seen better days. This led to us giving up by Sunday morning and returning home then. Overall the cottage was clean but the windows were covered in perpetual condensation that however much was mopped up came back almost instantly. Of course this meant there was mould on the window sills. Worrying if you are an asthmatic. Perhaps this particular rent was more suited to summer visitors rather than a winter stay?
