What our customers say about their holidays

    • Keith Hammersley - Verified booking

I've just returned from spending a great week with friends at Drumrunie and would have no hesitation at all in recommending it as somewhere to stay in the area.

We were a party of seven and were easily accommodated in the house, which is bigger than the photos might suggest, and which is very well laid-out - we didn't fully appreciate that until we'd been there for a short while, but it soon became apparent. Our trips to Scotland are an annual event, and we've stayed in some beautiful houses, but in many of them the kitchen has been separated from the lounge areas, sometimes by several other rooms; in Drumrunie the galley kitchen joins the main lounge (which comfortably seated all seven of us) to the conservatory, meaning that those involved in preparing and cooking meals were still part of the group, a big plus and there was a second, equally-comfortable, lounge where those looking for peace and quiet could read undisturbed. The kitchen was extremely well-stocked with utensils, crockery and cutlery, we could easily have eaten a number of meals without using the same items twice - although the two dishwashers meant that wasn't necessary and made it easy to keep up with the chores! The house was not only well-stocked but well-prepared, a good deal of effort had clearly gone into making sure we'd be happy as soon as we walked in the door and the owner, Patrick, even phoned us on our first morning to make sure we'd settled in OK and had everything we needed! Outside, the house is set in beautiful, well-maintained gardens and there are fantastic views in just about every direction. The house is a couple of minutes walk from the centre of Braemar, which boasts a variety of shops, a number of lunch venues and a bistro and a couple of hotels for evening meals (conveniently, a side road halfway down to the village led to an hotel which offered several excellent real ales, the only ones to be had in Braemar, we were told). There was a variety of good walks in the area, ranging from short, relatively flat, strolls to longer, more-demanding hikes. I particularly enjoyed the 'Cairns' walk, on the nearby Balmoral estate (see www.walkhighlands.co.uk) while my Monro-bagging friends had plenty to keep them happy. All in all, a great week in a great place, thanks to all concerned, I'd be very happy to return one day!

This is a beautiful property in a stunning location.

As others have said, it’s not easy to find from the directions, nor to be sure you’re in the right place, as there is no signage or name anywhere, so we went with a Prince Charming approach of finding out whether the key fitted the door. However, once you are there the views are fantastic and it’s a great place for access to the outdoors. The bedrooms are lovely, the en suite facilities brilliant, the warm drying room was much used this week and in general this is a really nice place to stay. On the minor downside, the lounge seating is rather tired and a bit uncomfortable to sit on and it would have been good to have had outdoor furniture for the few hours to enjoy the views from the covered outdoor area. The blocked drain mentioned by other reviewers is really quite noisy when it rains. There are a few more serious niggles though; the cooker lighting button didn’t work and no alternative lighting option was provided, the dishwasher made dishes dirtier rather than cleaner and when two of the automated fire doors started beeping and we removed their batteries as instructed, no one came to replace them after we called and left a message. I’ve stayed at properties on this estate before so I knew it might be difficult to find or contact staff and so it proved. Despite these issues (and the suboptimal weather!), we really enjoyed our stay revisiting the surrounding area and I’m sure we’ll be back. Next time we’ll make sure to pack matches.

We had a truly wonderful week at Claybokie.

It is a very special place in a magnificent setting. The house is lovely and it was very warmly furnished and supplied. The large supply of wood was excellent and lasted perfectly for one week. The kitchen (and Aga!) is amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed cooking and eating together in the grand dining room. However there are a couple of things we felt could be looked at. these did not detract at all from our enjoyment of the holiday, but hope they might help as constructive feedback. 1. We found it very difficult to work out where to collect the keys upon arrival. Approaching Mar Lodge is rather intimidating if one has never been there before and there is no signage for how to get around the back to reception. (These details are not listed in the key collection instructions). Equally there are no signs from the lodge to Claybokie itself, and in the dark it took us quite a while just to collect keys and work out where to go. 2. There was only one small (broken) clothes horse in the house for drying clothes. For a house sleeping 10, and no tumble dryer, there should be at least 2 clothes horses available. We did request another which was happily supplied. 3. The mattress on the left bed in the pink rose room could do with being replaced, as the springs are rather worn now. We definitely hope to return again, as claybokie and the Cairngorms have a special place in our heart now.

The house is in a beautiful setting but is also incredibly convenient for being able to walk in to the shops and cafes/restaurants on Braemar.

You feel very welcome and the house is well equipped, with all the touches of a home from home. A great information pack was provided prior to our visit and we found everything we needed and more! It is close to many Munro walks and a Corbett walk direct from the house. The views over the mountains are stunning and it is a very short walk to the river path which eventually leads to Braemar. The garden is beautiful and very well-kept with a lot of garden furniture in different areas if you want to sit outside. The conservatory was a favourite place of the whole family to gather as we all returned from whatever activity we did in the day. We loved the fact that the garden was deer proof so had no worries about the dog escaping and he had the run of the whole garden. In particular we enjoyed watching the birds and red squirrels flock around the feeders, we even saw a Tree Creeper from the conservatory. The downstairs bedroom with easy access en-suite shower room was a real boon for my mother. Beds were comfortable and rooms spacious. Overall a very enjoyable extended family holiday. Thank you!

Drumrunie is a most attractive and comfortable house with a stunning garden in a very quiet location.

We loved the fact that the garden was deer proof so had no worries about the dogs escaping and the children had plenty of toys to entertain themselves - and also couldn't escape! In particular we enjoyed feeding the birds and watching them flock around the feeders from the wonderful conservatory. A real bonus was the downstairs bedroom with fantastic en-suite shower room - perfect for the more elderly members of our family - and the nearby drawing room provided a welcome sanctuary for those who wanted some quiet time. Our family regularly rent a large house in Scotland and we feel that Drumrunie is probably the best house we have stayed in. On reading the Visitors Book we discovered that some relatives had stayed at the house on two occasions, quite a coincidence! We chose Drumrunie as we were looking for somewhere in the Aberdeen area which would accommodate our number of guests. We also liked the idea that it was within walking distance of the village of Braemar, which we subsequently found to be extremely friendly. We will be back!
