What our customers say about their holidays

    • Diane - Verified booking

Property was very well equipped to the point of cluttered.

No where in kitchen to put any food we’d brought for the week except the fridge. Great having two kitchens though. Garden was very over grown and although charming not easily accessible in parts - may have been a worry if you had young children, my elderly mum had a problem accessing some parts of the garden. We had to clean down the garden furniture before using it. Next door are building a house so all week there was building work which started at 8am! Owner had left lots of tea/coffee/sugar etc. there was every utensil imaginable. So many towels and linen. The stay was really comfortable but more like staying at someone’s house whilst they were still living there. Ruckinge is very rural. Nothing there except a church and a pub. But it’s only 15 minutes to the sea and a great place for walking. Property is good for taking your furry friends. All in all we had a good holiday and a lovely rest in this. quirky property. Thank you.

The owners met us to show us round and explain how things worked.

Every appliance had laminated instructions which were very helpful. We were given milk, tea bags, coffee, and drinking chocolate. Even nappy bags, dishwasher tablets and cleaning materials were in abundance. The book shelves had a wonderful supply of maps, guides and reading materials, including many on local history. Upstairs was light ,airy and tastefully decorated. We stayed downstairs ,being just a couple plus dog. The king sized bed was very comfortable. We both slept very well.We have experienced terrible beds in some self catering places. Unfortunately beds don’t get a comfort standard in self catering, and it can be a gamble. We had the feeling that we were sharing someone’s actual home, rather than a place with no atmosphere. The garden was well fenced so we didn’t have the worry that our dog would escape. The Old Post Office is well situated for access to the Military Canal and dog walks, plus the Romney Marsh.

An odd property, which some visitors will hate : others will 'enjoy' its eccentricity.

Downstairs is very different from the self-contained flat upstairs. Downstairs was very dirty, with some of the owners bits and pieces left lying around. It was hazardous for the less mobile and children - loose carpets for example, with chemical cleaning products seemingly left around everywhere. The garden was an accident waiting to happen, with metal and other debris lying around,a slippery pathway in the wet ; a danger for the aged, less moblle, children ...... and dogs. The owner greeted us on arrival - very friendly chap, who had lit a lovely log fire for us. Indeed, logs were available (no charge) for the length of our stay. The house was nice and warm. But so scruffy. Lots of spider plants everywhere - presumably for the musty damp? The house downstairs and the garden needs better maintenance : but very well equipped up and down. And inexpensive out of season ..... you pays your money!

When you walk into this property it is akin to receiving a 'warm and welcoming embrace' - it is a feeling of 'home'.

The kind of place where you know that it has been 'lived in' with personal memontos - but not intrusive to your own stay - they simply add to the overall experience. For a group of people, a family with teenagers or 2 families the space is perfect - a real 'upstairs downstairs' layout with 2 living spaces all in one - perfect! One is met by the owner who was friendly and informative, and the Instruction Manual filled in any other gaps. The large outside space was a veritable 'Garden of Eden' with several seating spaces as one makes one's way from the front to the rear and if you block out noises from neighbours you can imagine a little paradise, especially if the weather is kind. A maintenance issue with the iron was settled promptly with no hassle from the owner. Kudos!

The post office was generally a comfortable holiday home.

It reminded me of a Gites de France, with it's eclectic mix of decor, ornaments etc. There is some uneveness of the flooring which someone who is not steady on their feet might have a problem with. We looked at OS maps before booking and were pleased to see quite a few marked footpaths so were looking forward to being on them with our dog. However, apart from the signpost, most were impossible to actually find. There are some walks on cards at the home but these were published in 2001 and many have changed since. As with many places, a lot of motorists completely ignore the 30MPH limit through the village so there is regular noise from traffic. The dishwasher wasn't working so no change from washing up fo us
