What our customers say about their holidays

    • Alison - Verified booking

Solway Cottage is situated in the pretty village of Powfoot, only a few steps away from the Solway Firth shoreline.

The cottage is the first on the left, opposite the right hand turning into Ellerslie lane, as you descend into the village. The welcome gifts were greatly appreciated and enjoyed. The settees were comfortable with plenty of cushions. The twin beds, which had been put together to create a large double bed, were very comfortable and we slept well each night despite it being the hot weather in early September. However, there were no pillow protectors and one of the mattress protectors was stained. There is plenty of kitchen equipment though I found the food storage cupboard very small. The shower was very good and has coloured lighting to enhance the experience! The back/ side door was extremely difficult to open and lock , this may need some attention. The washing machine, which we only used once, sounded as if it was a concrete mixer, the noise was dreadful, it may require a service or replacement. The bedroom curtains were not thick enough to keep out the very early morning sunshine and blackout liners could be useful and easy to install. The fridge and freezer struggled to stay cold in the recent very hot weather, a blind on the porch door may be worth considering. There is no information about recycling glass bottles and jars, we brought ours home to recycle. We were alarmed at the prospect of a £250 Good Housekeeping Bond charge given that the whole of the property needed a deep clean. We found clumps of dog hairs everywhere, including hairs in the fridge! We were aware that this is a dog friendly property when we boomed but weren’t expecting this. We did clean the property to a better standard than that which we found. The curtain tie backs were on the floor, I reinstated them to their correct position. The bin in the kitchen had no top but I found it, broken, in the under sink cupboard, this I mended and put back on the bin. The under sink cupboards are dirty and so were skirting boards. There are lots of stains and marks on walls. Maybe others would be content to put up with all of this. We won’t be booking again to stay at Solway Cottage.

The location of Pow-Wow shore cottage is perfect.

The view of the estuary is amazing and ever changing. It is worth using the binoculars provided to watch the shore birds as there are so many. The location is peaceful and I love the lack of street lighting. The on street parking is very plentiful and as we brought 3 cars it was much appreciated. The immediate surrounding buildings are lovely and there is an interesting history to the area. The nearby town of Annan has everything you'll need including a superb bakery and a Tesco superstore. The cottage is great. Although the kitchen is tiny it had everything we needed apart from a teapot. The dining table fitted us all comfortably. We didn't use the washer drier but it was reassuring knowing that it was there and a rotary airer with pegs in the garden. We appreciated the hooks by the backdoor as it enabled us to hang up all our coats and leave outdoor boots to dry. A few tiny changes could really improve visits - tighten the screws on the toilet seat downstairs and for the hot water tap for the downstairs washbasin. Also more plug sockets / extension leads in the front bedrooms as well as bins in bedrooms. Finally, thicker pillows as the ones provided were ridiculously thin.

      A delightful and relaxing holiday.

From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the charm and attention to detail that made our holiday memorable. It's about 6 minutes from Annan and sits alone in a large garden. The garden is ideal—large and well maintained. It gave us a peaceful retreat to play with the dog. We got to enjoy the willow dome and swing seat, surrounded by greenery. The lilies by the front door were stunning, and we loved walking past them and catching their scent. The cottage is so very peaceful, with a comfortable bed, two good showers, a well-equipped kitchen with high-quality appliances and utensils and the living areas were furnished with a perfect blend of style and practicality. The cottage has thoughtful touches, from the welcome backet and milk in the fridge to the art pieces. We very quickly found ourselves slowing down to a peaceful holiday-pace, and Una the dog enjoyed the calm and quiet and pootling about the garden. We can easily imagine how cosy the cottage would be with the fire lit during the autumn and winter months. We are looking forward to returning.

The cottage is in a beautiful location, with views over the Solway estuary that you never tire of.

The people locally are very friendly and welcoming. The area is unfairly overlooked as a part of Scotland for tourists to explore: we found some fabulous places to visit, including stunning walks (see the Black Loch in Galloway Forest), towns (Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas) and eateries (don’t miss Gather Laggan) within a 90 minute drive. The cottage has lots of positives: it was very clean, with large lounge and diner, two toilets handy for our family of four, and comfy beds. The kitchen was very small, but useable with the dining area and utility space. Though we would love to see a slimline dishwasher installed. The garden was well maintained and cosy to sit in the evening sunshine, though we would request a dog friendly gate which we think could be easily added. The lovely decor in the cottage was to our taste and it was well equipped with sharp knives (unusual in holiday cottages sadly) and utensils. We very much enjoyed lighting the log burner on our first night. Thank you for a lovely stay in this beautiful part of Scotland

This is a nicely located property close to the sea, and with dedicated off-road parking.

It has an excellent bathroom with a decent shower. The kitchen is small but fine for a week. The bedrooms are small but OK & with plenty of hanging space & drawers. The lounge/diner is large & airy, but suffers from 2 weaknesses which should be remedied quickly. The first is there is only one lamp - so we had to move that to the dining table to eat in the evenings and then unplug it & move it back to the side of the sofa afterwards. A second lamp would cost very little but enhance the experience significantly. The worst feature of this property by a mile is the television. It is not a SMART, so it's not connectable to the Wi-Fi, and therefore it's impossible to connect to Netflix/Amazon Prime/BBC i-Player/X. It isn't even possible to connect your mobile to the set with wires - as the set is so old it only has the old video connections - no USB connections. This is really something the owner should address - these days everyone uses catch-up TV, and not having access to it was a negative. The welcome pack was nice & much appreciated too.
