      Where does one start?

Port View is one of three apartments on different floors (number 5), above us was the quiet number 6, but on the top (number 7) was a different kettle of fish. Our first night was ruined by the noisy sounds of a music rave which lasted until the early hours of Saturday. We had an inkling something was wrong when around 4pm on the Friday afternoon, when a number of people entered the complex (our apartment is right by the front door) shouting on the stairs etc, and our concerns grew when loud music began to play. The volume increased during the evening and at that point we were thinking of going home. We went out for a meal hoping on our return everything would have quieted down. No such luck, in fact on our return we saw for ourselves one young man shouting from a top window, the entry code to the complex to his mates below on the road. Consequently more people entered the building and we began to feel nervous of what could happen to us. Next day we informed Sykes and to their credit got things sorted out with a promise we would not be disturbed again. (Port View is the only apartment under Sykes’ control) The rest of the week was quiet, but it did leave us on edge waiting for something else to kick off. Another problem about Port View is where it is. We read the owners instructions on how to find the apartment which were wholly inadequate and poorly written, in fact it needed a phone call to the very helpful manager (Sue) prior to going, to sort out how to approach the building. Another hassle was the parking of the car in the allotted parking space. Our car is a Mini but we still found it tight. One morning we entered the garage to find another car parked right by us which would have prevented us from accessing the car (by luck we hadn’t planned using it), if we had it would have required one of us to open the car window and squeeze through head first!! Overall it was a hard holiday, unable to really feel relaxed, with concerns over apartment 7, and issues with the parking. This leads to the question of Port View’s suitability as a holiday let, and should it really be included in Sykes’ portfolio? Can I end stating once again that the company did a great job in handling our problems and concerns, we had no complaints about the comfort of Port View either, but needless to say , we will not be coming back.

This wonderful apartment was just perfect for our family holiday to Porthtowan.

We wanted to be close to a beach but also have amenities around us too. The apartment was beautifully clean and the attention to detail was absolutely amazing. The little extras, like dog blankets, toys for the dogs, scones and clotted cream on arrival, souvenir jam jars to take home. The list goes on! The apartment is very modern and well thought out. The drawers and cupboards were full of everything you will need! It was very comfy and had a home from home feel to it. The main oven didn’t work which was a shame but we managed with the top oven for the week. We struggled to remove the shower head from the unit which became a bit annoying at times. The water pressure wasn’t great but we knew this before we arrived. The only downside to this apartment is the lack of privacy in the garden. There is a few steps leading from the back garden which gives you quick access to the park opposite or the beach road. Unfortunately, our neighbours were using this constantly which did cause issues as we had no privacy whatsoever as they were in and out climbing over the wall every few minutes. This was the only big problem for us. Our children would be outside playing and then run in as they were embarrassed about having people walking over the wall. If it was a few times then this would’ve been fine, but it was very frequent! However, this wouldn’t stop us going back to Offshore, as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there, it ticked every box for us. You are literally opposite the pub which is a great location if you like to go out for drinks and cocktails in the evening, but you do get a bit fed up with the smell of garlic and seafood entering the apartment every day. We visited the pub which didn’t really fit our family as the menu is mainly seafood. We asked for haddock and our kids ended up with platefuls of octopus, prawns and squid! Needless to say we left hungry which was a shame, but if you’re a seafood lover then you’ll love it! I have given this apartment 5 stars as we really were so overwhelmed by the amount of thought that’s gone into making this property perfect for your holiday by the sea! The little touches made it for us! Porthtowan is a beautiful place to stay. We will be back Offshore! Thanks for making this a holiday we’ll never forget! ❤️

Myself and partner stayed here for a birthday getaway at the weekend.

I was a little sceptical after reading a few of the reviews but we decided to go ahead. After making the 6 hour journey we arrived to a lovely little snug which is pretty small but compact and a nice outdoor area with the tub. Despite the set up, (and I’m not usually one to criticise) but I can confirm that the previous reviews are pretty valid. It’s very small (probably big enough for one person). the bed is horrendous to sleep on, like sleeping on a plank, and the pillows are so flat, so be sure to pack a duvet/pillows if you’re going! The downstairs area is pretty small and the sofa is tiny - which is only big enough for one person. Perhaps it would be better to put two chairs instead of the sofa, as we ended up having to eat either outside in the cold or up on the bed…which isn’t ideal! We used the hot tub (or should I say cold tub) twice and it was freezing..it seems like its stuck on option 1…so we’re unable to turn up the heat! (I know we have an energy crisis on but it’s slightly ridiculous that we sat in a cold tub - which was the main reason we booked the accommodation). You can also hear the neighbours really loudly next door and several times through the night there was banging and loud music going on. I know their on holidays too but it’s like living on top of one another… Had we not had such a long drive we’d have left a night earlier but decided to stick it out as we were both exhausted from the lack of sleep. It’s such a shame as it has quite a lot of potential but the negatives really out way the positives and really put a dampener on the holiday!

Private hot tub is a joke with 9 windows overlooking it in a terraced back yard.

Parasol to make it private was broken and has been since Oct 22 according to other reviews. The hot tub was one of the main reasons we booked the Snug, we were very disappointed to find it so overlooked, we felt very much on show. The pictures make it look as though it is not overlooked at all. Also you cannot use the hot tub after 10pm due to noise restrictions, this was not mentioned when we reviewed the Snug to book. There is nowhere to hang wet swimming costumes when you come out of the hot tub, or coats. This could be easily sorted with a coat rack next to the bathroom door. Advertised as a self catering apartment, very difficult when the so called fridge is a drinks chiller which struggled to keep drinks cool let alone milk, butter or any other food. We had to eat out everyday which adds significantly to the cost of a holiday. This could easily be rectified by putting a small fridge under the stairs. Fire alarm went off due to people in another flat burning food, tried to ring emergency contact number to have the fire alarm turned off, only to find the phone number was incorrect, which was quite stressful and inconvenient. We rang the daytime office number twice to complain about these problems, and twice we were promised a phone call back which never happened. We came home a day early as we couldn't stay there any longer. This was our honeymoon and our only time away this year totally ruined by the Snug being misrepresented and the photo's being misleading. I would like our money back or at least part of it as we feel robbed of a holiday. I would not book through Sykes Cottages again.
