What our customers say about their holidays

    • Shaunna - Verified booking

After staying along Marine Parade for a number of years in different apartments, we were excited for our stay.

Admittedly, I was slightly disappointed in some of the facilities and comfort elements available. The bedrooms and bathroom were relatively spacious. However, we did find the main bed extremely uncomfortable (way too firm).. resulting in a few aches and poor sleep throughout the course of the week. The fact that the blinds are extremely thin (almost paper like) and are unaccompanied by curtains, the rooms are extremely bright from the early morning. Both my husband and my daughter struggled managing to sleep past 5.30am due to being unable to block out any light. This hugely impaired the week. The living area was well equipped with DVDs and games, however, the sofa was really unwelcoming and extremely uncomfortable. The cushions do not support anything, and it felt extremely worn. This resulted in a bit of a fight for the lone bucket chair of an evening when we resided back to the apartment. The rug in the living room was also disgustingly dirty, and rolling up at the corners causing a trip hazard. With the cost of the apartment, we really would have anticipated better. The kitchen would benefit with a cupboard specifically for storage of food items. As we stayed for 7 nights, items like tea, coffee, cereal, snacks, juice were essential.. however, there was absolutely no where to store these. Many things were left in bags on floors, which isn’t really the experience we were hoping for. A main concern was when we came to dispose of garbage on the upper floor. My husband went to find where the disposal was, and the door on the top floor slammed shut, locking him out on the roof terrace with no method of contacting. His phone was still in the apartment. He was locked on the roof for nearly 40 minutes and he had to climb over a fence and through a hedge to get back resulting in dirty clothes and a cut head! He had the apartment keys however none would open the top terrace door. The apartment didn’t feel particularly clean.. personally finding used hair bobbles, bracelets, clips from what I can assume was past residents. There was also no tools to clean it personally. Having an apartment opposite the beach almost guarantees sand / dirt, however no brush or hoover was available to keep on top of the mess. More than once throughout the week, I attempted to clean the floor with a dustpan, however, this wasn’t a practical option. Overall… the beautiful views of Lyme Regis guaranteed my family a nice week.. however, admittedly, most places, if not all that we have stayed in prior were better equipped than this one sadly.

This review pertains to a reservation made in November 2024.

The Penthouse in West Bay has always been my wife and my preferred choice for a peaceful week-long getaway in November, consistently delivering first-rate, 5-star luxury—exactly what one should expect for the price paid. Unfortunately, upon our arrival on Friday, November 22nd, we found the building covered in scaffolding. While this was less than ideal and we wished we had been informed when making the booking, we thought we could manage. What we found unacceptable was a group of loud workmen showing up right outside the balcony and terrace of the Penthouse at 8:30 in the morning, working on the wall render just inches from the windows. It quickly became clear that a private and tranquil week away was out of the question. As Lyme Bay Holidays could not provide an alternative property of similar caliber, we made the decision to leave for home immediately. Additionally, we typically purchase frozen foods for our stay and use the Penthouse freezer. Regrettably, either the previous occupant or an operative from Lyme Bay had turned off the freezer at the mains, and we only discovered this hours later when we found all the food had thawed and was spoiled. In conclusion, after numerous telephone calls to Lyme Bay Holidays (now operated by Sykes Cottages), we were able to secure a partial refund. However, since we had to cut our trip well short, it was clear we did not enjoy the week we had hoped for. To date, we have yet to receive any apology from either Lyme Bay Holidays or the property owners, which is particularly disappointing considering we are loyal customers and given the significant amount we spent

We found Corum lodge to be comfortable and clean.

The bed was really comfy. It's in a fantastic location, with parking and a garden for our pooch being a real bonus. A welcome pack on arrival was a nice touch. However, there were some issues which meant that I couldn't give the property 5 stars. The lodge is compact, which means you have to navigate corners and doorways with care. This being the case the door handles are way too large and stick out too far. I have come home covered in bruises! The double quilt supplied was too heavy for the summer. We had to sleep with only a sheet on us, but in the early hours it was very cold without a blanket. A summer duvet is needed for the hotter months. There is an internal step between the livingroom and the bedroom. This should be highlighted in the accommodation description. Our elderly dog couldn't navigate the step which meant we were constantly having to lift him up and down it. There is a washing machine at the property, which I presumed would have a drying function (it doesn't). The airer that was provided was flimsy and too small. A bigger airer that is stable enough to put outside would have meant a lot less hassle. There was no fan at the property. Luckily I took my own fan, otherwise it would have been way too hot to sleep without it. Apart from these issues we really enjoyed our stay. I would recommend Corum lodge as it is perfect for a couples get away.

My friend and I very much enjoyed our 4 days spent in the Lobster apartment.

The views were spectacular, a pair of binoculars would have been an added bonus, and the property was furnished and equipped to a high standard. I had noticed in some reviews that the degree of comfort of the sofa had been mentioned, this didn't seem to be a problem although we didn't spend much time in the apartment as the weather was so glorious to sit on it for long! Perhaps a little low and too deep for me but not an issue. I was in the double bedroom and the firmness of the mattress was ideal, I couldn't have slept better. Food storage in the kitchen area was lacking slightly but we could understand how it would have been difficult to squeeze in any more cupboard space. We very much appreciated all the small touches, books, dvd's, hairdryer, iron etc and the discreet notices. Unfortunately, we didn't get round to eating in Tom's restaurant below though the menu looked very interesting, but the owner, (we assumed) was extremely friendly and helpful. Booking through Sykes was easy and they were helpful too as was the person who happened to greet us at Lyme Bay holidays when we picked up the keys. All in all it was a wonderful and much needed short break away after a very difficult time in my life. I would certainly recommend Lobster, and indeed already have to friends upon my return.

This was a nice property in a good location to access Weymouth centre.

Although with young children we ended up driving and spending a fortune on parking by mid-week as it's a good 20min walk to town then another 10-15min walk on to the main beach area (at young child walking pace), which both ways with children adds up to a lot of whinging! One thing to bear in mind, particularly if you have children, is the lack of shower facility. There is a shower attachment on the bath but there is no shower curtain due to the space. Cleaning off 4 people after being in the sea is no easy task and it was difficult to not completely soak the bathroom! Also worth noting that it's on the 3rd floor, which initially doesn't sound bad, we're not an unfit family. But by the final day everyone was complaining about the 45 steps up to the front door! It's listed as a luxury property but there are little details missing, such as there's no toilet roll holder. A little thing admittedly but there were a few things where we thought it was probably luxury when first rented but there are parts that look a little tired now (for example, the loose floorboard which we slid and nearly fell over on more than once in the kitchen). That said, there's a lovely view of the sea from the main bedroom, and it is a lovely property.

    Frequent questions

    • What is the best base for exploring Dorset?

The town of Dorchester is often considered the best base for exploring Dorset. From there, you can easily visit the Jurassic Coast, including popular spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, as well as historical sites such as Maiden Castle and Thomas Hardy's Cottage. Dorchester itself has a rich history and offers amenities, accommodation options, and transport connections that make it an ideal base for exploring the diverse beauty of Dorset.

From the stunning Jurassic Coast with its picturesque beaches and iconic landmarks like Durdle Door, to charming towns and villages, historical sites, and beautiful countryside, Dorset is well worth a visit. Whether you're interested in coastal walks, exploring historical landmarks, indulging in local cuisine, or simply relaxing in a tranquil setting, Dorset has something for everyone.

    • Do you need a car in Dorset?

While having a car can be beneficial for exploring the wider areas of Dorset, it is not always necessary, especially if you plan to stay in more central locations or focus on specific attractions. Dorset has a well-connected public transportation system, including buses and trains, which can be used to access many popular destinations. However, if you wish to venture off the beaten path or explore the countryside extensively, having a car can offer more flexibility and convenience.
