"The Grand View cottage definitely has a grand view. The location is very good for travelling the island. However, we were really disppointed with the cottage because we did NOT get what we saw on the pictures. The pictures clearly show a cosy living room with two comfortable looking couches (one of the previous guests even mentioned that one of the couches was a sofaBED), and a dvd player and cd player are mentioned. So we thought that even on a bad weather day (and we know there can be plenty on the Outer Hebrides), we can still sit in a cosy cottage, cuddle up in front of the tv and watch a dvd, so we brought a lot of dvds over. The couches that are shown on the photos are not there any longer. Instead, there is a very uncomfortable sofa and two very uncomfortable chairs. The dvd player did not work, and as this doubled as the cd player, we could not listen to cds either. We could not even make a camp on the floor in front of the tv because the floor is not carpeted and the soft looking carpet that one can see on the Grand View's own website (which we had checked as well before we booked, because we wanted to make sure we get something we like), is gone, too and has been replaced by a rope-like one. There are no soft blankets in the cottage, just blankets which are obviously for dogs. We were really disappointed about this, we clearly did NOT get what we expected and what we paid for. Moreover, the bed was very uncomfortable as well: the mattress (and in case our arguments will be brushed away by "it is a good quality mattress": even a good quality mattress has to be replaced from time to time!) and pillows need to be replaced (and again, yes, we did find new anti-allergenic pillows. But they were in an unopened box in the cupboard, not on the bed, so we figured we were not supposed to open and use them!), and the duvet is one with goose feathers, which is highly unhygienic. So we did not have a single comfortable place to rest in this cottage, which was really disappointing. The fact that the kitchen was more or less stripped bare was a pity, too. There was no washing powder, no baking paper or kitchen foil, so we had to buy everything for our stay, which might not be problem for UK visitors who travel with their own car and can take the things back home with them, but it is for people from abroad who can only take 20 kilos on the plane and certainly don't want to take kitchen foil and washing powder. The shower was funny. The shower curtain was so low that both our heads were towering over it (and my wife is not particularly tall), while the botton of the curtain was lying on the floor, blocking the drain. This cottage is obviously good for people with dogs, who have the advantage to find a place for two dogs with no extra cost for pets, and we can only guess that previous dogs were responsible for the "new" sofa, chairs and carpet. However, if you want to have a romantic break as a couple, or if you are not in great health and need to rest or lie down, then this cottage is definitely not to be recommended. We have stayed in many, many cottages over the years and we had luxurious as well as more basic ones. But never have we had such bad value for money. We will attach a photo of what the living room looks like now, so future guests are not misled as we were. Had we known this, we certainly wouldn't have booked."

"If you want a completely different 'cottage' experience go no further than Beach Bay Cottage. Communication with the owners was friendly and they were extremely helpful with information from the start. Walking into the cottage, well, you just had to stop and stare out of the panoramic windows at the most amazing sandy beach scenery. The cottage was immaculate and all accessories you could want including a coffee pod machine (although there were some pods to start with we would advise taking your own supply as the local Uig community shop did not stock them and its a 45 minute journey to Stornoway if you need them). For provisions for your holiday Tesco deliver to the door so we would advise ordering a week in advance before your trip. The bedrooms/bathrooms were just stunning and beds so comfy. Powerful binoculars were also supplied and we were fortunate enough to spy sea and golden eagles in the bay. We could not possibly fault anything at the cottage, the location was just breath taking. The beach is amazing and the softest sand we have ever walked on. The beach is extremely safe for children and the river that runs into the sea had lots of small fish in it for the kids to catch in their nets. There are areas next to the cottage on the sand which have clams and cockles (just look for the blowholes at low tide) and armed with a rake you can have yourself a potful of them in 15 minutes for clam chowder. The local amenities are local community coffee shops and it's a pleasure to watch locals get together there and speak their native tongue. The locals are very friendly and we helped a crofter gather his cows and move them to a new grazing area on one of our walks. where else could you do that? There are no local resturants close by but there is one being built so should be good for 2019 and we would recommend SEATREK for a variety of outdoor pursuits which is only a 10 minute drive away from the cottage. If you like fishing then you have virtually unlimited lochs to fish for free with the guidance of the local ghillie who was kind enough to visit us and point to where to fish. There is beautiful scenery all around and numerous hills to climb but sadly we ran out of time. If you want total peace and quiet and a get away from it all holiday, then look no further. I would class the holiday as self catering because of the distance you would have to travel to eat out and the local Uig community shop is horrendously expensive with very little selection available to you so ensure you have a meal menu for the week and buy provisions at Tesco in Stornoway or get them delivered. If we're fortunate with availability then we'll be back 2020 for another amazing week. I understand the cottage was a monumental effort to build with the regulations and professional services to deal with so our grateful thanks to George and Lynda for making the effort and enriching our lives with an experience we will never forget. Thank you for letting us spend time in your cottage."

"Lovely cottage, recommend the bed in the en-suite room - simply the most comfortable I have ever slept in on holiday. There is everything you are likely to need for a holiday stay including good cooking knives. Local amenities - This is South Uist so don't expect shops everywhere or nightlife.... there is an amazing beach very close by, with excellent rock pools to explore, hills in the distance for those of you into that sort of thing, a well stocked Co-op supermarket 5 mins away with prices in line with the mainland, a pub within easy walking distance, more wildlife than you can shake a camera at and an amazing view out of the living room window.... The closest ferry terminal is Lochboisdale which has a daily crossing to Mallaig BUT it is not the most reliable service - if there is a strong wind blowing its highly likely to be cancelled. I recommend using the Uig (Skye) to Lochmaddy (North Uist) route which is shorter and more sheltered than the more southerly crossing to/from Mallaig and is much less likely to be cancelled during inclement weather (I speak from bitter experience - however beautiful I don't recommend trying to fill in 9 hours on North Uist waiting for a ferry!)I summary the cottage is lovely and spacious, Neil the owner is very friendly and helpful, the islands are beautiful and its a perfect spot for a relaxing holiday away from it all, note - the mobile phone signal in the cottage is weak and patchy but there is wifi available for those moments when you need to share those photos of holiday with your friends via social media."

"Lovely on the outside. Not clean on the inside. Damp. Dirty oven and furry corners (dusty) throughout house. Fridge door black mouldy and around shower. Kitchen towel drawer had green mouldy leaflets stuck to bottom of it. Owner refused to have house cleaned and bed changed in middle of two week let. No compensation offered for the lack of this service. She did leave a change of clean bedding and a motley selection of towels. No complaints about furniture.Photographs of dirt and mould supplied.Agency wrote to owner and advised me "Mrs Moore say that as you did not report any of your concerns to her during your stay, and she was given no opportunity to investigate or assist, she is unable to confirm at what point during the two weeks your photographs were taken."The photographs of the dirt and mould shown in the photographs supplied were taken whilst we were there but had built up over a significant period prior to that. We had already been refused a cleaner and the owner lived in Manchester, too far away for easy contact (no wifi in cottage and mobile signal poor). The agency only acted as a communicator and accepted no liability for advertising this cottage or the lack of cleanliness."

"We have stayed in many very decent cottages in the UK over the years however this was in a league of its own. A combination of a warm welcome from the owner and furnishing to a homely and tasteful standard makes it stand out for us. We really appreciated how it was decorated to be sympathetic to the surrounding views - which are so wonderful. The location is great for walks and views as well as not far from a good local store with everything you need for the week. We loved Lewis too, full of beauty and atmosphere as well as history. The cottage has plenty of information in the way of books or leaflets to help you get the most out of what Lewis has to offer. Although you could easily not stray far from cottage. A real escape and fantastic holiday."
