Stepping outside the chalet and you are transported to another world where the skies are constantly changing and wildlife is in abundance. Within walking distance there are unspoilt beaches, cycling, hill walking and there is an attractive circular walk around Scalpay where you can see the Eilan Glas lighthouse and over to the Isle of Skye. Tarbert is a short but scenic drive away and as well as a numbers of shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants there is the Harris Gin Distillery well worth a visit as is the Harris Tweed Centre. A little further away is Stornoway which is worth a visit in its own right with its gift shops, award-winning eateries and historical attractions such as Lews Castle and from here you can get a boat to explore neighbouring islands. Built around an inlet on Loch Fyne, Tarbert has long been both a harbour and a key strategic point in the history of Scotland's rugged West Coast. Tarbert once required three castles to protect it, and the ruins of one of these can still be visited today. Built around the natural harbour, fishing and sailing continue to play an important part in the life of the village. There are many annual events to interest all tastes including the sailing regatta on Loch Fyne, seafood and music festivals. The 87 mile Kintyre Way stretches from Tarbert to the south of the Kintyre Peninsula, and offers walking for all levels and with ferry connections to Islay and Arran, there is simply no better location to relax and explore this rugged and picturesque part of Scotland.
