The charming border town of Coldstream, which is home to the illustrious Coldstream Guards and is located on the northern bank of the River Tweed, was formerly a competitor of Gretna Green for runaway marriages. Visitors can try their hand at a range of activities, such as cycling, fishing, golfing, horseback, or walking in the wonderful nearby countryside, in addition to a museum devoted to the Guards and a good selection of stores and taverns. The Hirsel, an estate to the west of the town with a stately mansion in gorgeous gardens through which flow the Leet Waters, is known for a vast variety of birds which nest there. It serves as the picturesque seat of The Earls of Hume, including former Conservative Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home. This is a great location from which to explore the area because the Scottish borders and North Northumberland are both easily accessible.

Very well equipped and well placed for visiting for visiting Northumberland and Scotland. We a had a wonderful stay.

  • Sharon

Very good food at the local pub and shops nearby for essentials.

A good base to enjoy Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Access to the courtyard parking off the street is tricky particularly as we have a long estate car. Parking is shared in the courtyard with 3 other cars and our allotted space was tight against the wall of Horseshoe Cottage which was fine. Reversing off the street was the best option. The neighbours were extremely friendly and welcoming.
