Guests say

The House on the Slip offers a truly unique and tranquil escape, set in a breathtaking, secluded location on the Isle of Skye. Guests consistently praise the stunning wildlife views, cosy atmosphere, and the warm, helpful owner. The cottage is well-equipped and perfect for nature lovers seeking peace and relaxation. While some mention minor issues with cleanliness, dated kitchen and bathroom facilities, and a steep drive, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.

Most guests found the cottage clean and comfortable, though a few noted areas needing improvement, such as bits in drawers, under beds, and some dog hairs. The kitchen and crockery were occasionally mentioned as needing extra cleaning.

The location is repeatedly described as outstanding, secluded, and perfect for wildlife watching, with direct views of seals, pine martens, and sea eagles. The remoteness is a highlight, though guests note the long single-track road and distance from shops.

Guests found the cottage cosy, warm, and comfortable, with special mention of the beds and living spaces. Some noted restricted head height upstairs and a steep drive, but overall comfort was highly rated.

The cottage is generally well-equipped, but several reviews mention dated kitchen appliances, chipped crockery, inconsistent shower, and a lack of a welcome pack. The property has everything needed for a stay, but some maintenance and updates would enhance the experience.

The owner is praised for being helpful, knowledgeable, and responsive. While some guests mentioned receiving spring water, there is no consistent mention of welcome gifts, and such gestures cannot be guaranteed.

The House on the Slip is the oldest house in Kylerhea and as per the name, sits on the point at Kylerhea and is a mere 10-12 feet from the “Hide Tide line”. There is nothing better than to sit in the sun room watching the tide come in, and hearing the waves as they hit the rocks right in front of your eyes. Sleeping upstairs can also be accompanied by listening to the loch and the surrounding wildlife. In the field behind the cottage are the owner’s Hebridean sheep, and back again are their two Shetland ponies. You really will have your own haven away from the hustle and bustle, as the cottage is at the end of a wee track so hearing traffic is a rarity.

The children will find their hideaways as they go along the shore. Throughout the day, you can watch the seals and otters in front of the house and the frequent visitors of the dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks. Above the sea, you can see the golden eagles that fly the high ridges above while the two resident sea eagles Victor and Orla rob the fish off the seagulls outside the patio doors.

The loch in front of the house is the Kylerhea Narrows, and you can get the small community-run turntable ferry over from Glenelg on the mainland. The first sailing is at 10AM, and the last sailing is between 6 and 7PM and is dependent on the season. Although there is no advance booking facility, the local ferrymen would not see anyone left behind!

Whilst walking around Kylerhea you can see roe deer, red deer, mink, pine martens, weasels, foxes, adders and alpacas. There really is something for all the family; teach the kids how to fly fish from the rocks and enjoy the fruits of your fishing for your meal. The views at night from the house are some of the best views you will ever see, a great spot for the Northern Lights. This is truly a holiday cottage that you and your family will remember and pass on the amazing stories to generations to come.

The midges greeted us on arrival, never unloaded the car as fast. By the end of the week they’d given up. Fantastic location, even though the ferry was out of service but this made the 6 mile road to the house easier to negotiate. Many seals on the rocks, pine martens visited every night. They loved eggs, smooth peanut butter & mixed dried fruit. We didn’t watch tv at all just watched wildlife & numerous boats passing by.
