John o’groats is a little isolated and many alternative attractions are many miles away. The village is a day visit. It is on the NC500 but to return to base each time limits the amount of the route to be covered.

Stable Cottage was the perfect location for us to get away from it all and to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Caithness countryside. The coastline upon which the mill and its cottages sits is stunning. Sandy beaches and rugged cliffs with views across to Orkney combine to make a unique habitat for wildlife. Seals make a regular appearance along with Puffins at the right time of the year, and if you’re lucky you may even see Orcas and Dolphins. Located right next to the recently restored and reopened John o’ Groats Mill, the cottage sits within a 2 minute walk to the accessible path along the shore to John o’ Groats, itself just 10 minutes away. The cottage was comfortable and homely and equipped with everything we could need for our stay. Our hosts at the mill next door could not do enough to make us feel welcome and at home and we greatly enjoyed making use of the free entry which comes with the cottage rental. We explored this beautifully-restored historical structure on a couple of occasions and on the Sunday were able to see the machinery turning under water power. In terms of amenities, John o’ Groats itself has a bar at the brewery there as well as cafes and a fish and chip van. The local post office has a small grocery for essentials but for a big shop you will need to head to either Wick or Thurso - both about 20 minutes away by car. The cottage was comfortable and spacious for the three of us and the knowledge that we were helping to fund the upkeep of the mill by staying there made our stay all the better. Highly-recommended!

Stable cottage and the surroundings were absolutely beautiful and the cottage came with everything we needed for the week, bringing the dog was not an issue as well.John 'o Groats is only a quick walk along the beach and the area itself was very walkable as well. Getting there by car was pretty easy and the weather was fantastic. We would absolutely recommend Stable cottage and are happy to return!
