About this property

The Well is a recently built contemporary cottage in the peaceful hamlet of Mains Riddle near Southernedd and is finished to luxury standards and with stunning views over open farmland to the Solway Firth and Lake District hills beyond. The Well is so called because it is across the road from Mainsriddle’s public water pump, but don’t worry the cottage has mains water! The layout of the cottage with panoramic window walls makes the most of the south facing location and provides superb accommodation for 4.

NEW TO THE market FOR 2024

The Well is a recently built contemporary cottage, finished to luxury standards and with stunning views over open farmland to the Solway Firth and Lake District hills beyond. The Well is so called because it is across the road from Mainsriddle’s public water pump, but don’t worry the cottage has mains water! The layout of the cottage with panoramic window walls makes the most of the south facing location and provides superb accommodation for 4. The open plan kitchen, dining and seating area provides a wonderful light space from which to enjoy the scenery. It may almost be so comfortable, warm and cosy that you won’t want to venture out but if you do you will delight on return in the evening to take in stunning sunsets and seascapes while reviewing the days adventures.

The local area provides a wealth of opportunities for exploring all of Scotland’s great outdoors, wild History & culture, and not forgetting cuisine! To start with the opportunities for a relax during your day out there are good pubs and restaurants at Kirkbean, Southerness; Sandyhills, Rockcliffe and Kippford. The common denominator for all of these is that they have a beach, other than at Kippford which is a busy sailing centre. The market town of Castle Douglas is a popular destination with plentiful art galleries, independent shops for both food and gifts and not to forget it’s cafes and restaurants which have earned it the reputation of being South West Scotland’s Food Town.

Wildlife is on the door step with wintering geese filling the sky and fields when not at their “hotel” of rspb Mersehead Reserve. The reserve has a variety of trails and hides so that you can enjoy all the visiting waterfowl, there is also an interesting walk leading through the reserve and along the sandy beach. The Solway Coast of course is superb for walking with rocky headlands and deserted coves to explore. Further inland you will find wildlife havens in the Galloway Forest Park and four more rspb reserves at Ken-Dee Marshes, Wood of Cree, Crook of Baldoon and for more of a day trip at Scotland’s most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway.

Castle bagging in the area is well provided for with Threave Castle at Castle Douglas worth a visit where you have to ring the bell to call the boat to ferry you to it’s island. Carlaverock Castle on the other side of Dumfries is a must as it is the only Triangular castle in Britain. There are many other sites to visit including Sweetheart Abbey at New Abbey together with one of the oldest Corn Mills, both sites are managed by Historic Scotland.

The choice of outdoor pursuits are too many to list but include horse riding, cycling, walking, fishing and of course, golf with the Championship Links Course at Southerness on the doorstep as is the pretty Colvend Golf Course with it’s parkland setting and panoramic views from the high cliffs. There are woodland walks nearby and in the Galloway Forest Park so you are truly spoilt for choice whatever your special interest is.

If you are looking for strenuous activity then the Forestry Commission woodlands provide excellent mountain biking opportunities with the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Trails at Mabie Forrest and Dalbeattie Woods only minutes from the front door. Opportunities for those who like to get wet are available at Kippford a popular sailing destination and the Galloway Activity Centre on Loch Ken.
