Nestled in the scenic Grosmont, it offers a peaceful retreat with stunning views and local charm. The property's unique character as a converted chapel adds to the enchanting experience, despite some minor feedback on maintenance and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The majority of guests found Preacher's Rest to be very clean, with only a few isolated comments regarding mould and cleaning standards in the bathrooms. The overall impression is that the property is maintained to a high level of cleanliness.

The location is highly praised for its stunning views, proximity to local attractions such as the steam railway, and its suitability for exploring the North York Moors. The peaceful and beautiful setting is consistently appreciated by guests.

Guests generally found the property to be comfortable, with special mentions of cosy beds and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Some guests noted issues with mattress comfort and the temperature in the bedrooms, but these were not widespread concerns.

The facilities at Preacher's Rest are well-regarded, particularly the well-equipped kitchen and modern amenities. However, there were comments about Wi-Fi issues, TV reception, and the need for additional kitchenware, which suggests room for improvement in this area.

About this property

A stunning converted Wesleyan chapel in the picturesque village of Grosmont in the Esk Valley, 7 miles inland from Whitby.

Finished to an extremely high standard, the property is configured upside down with its three bedrooms on the ground floor and luxury living space on the first floor.

Families or couples will appreciate the character of this beautiful period building and its delightful village setting, amidst open countryside.

Once inside, an entrance hallway leads to three comfortable en-suite bedrooms with gorgeous recessed lancet windows. The single and king-size bedrooms each have their own en-suite shower rooms, with shower, basin and WC. There is also a twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom with bath, shower over,  basin and WC.

A central staircase leads to the first floor with spacious open plan living area including a sitting area with large TV/DVD, a stylish, fully-equipped kitchen with granite work surfaces and breakfast bar. Enjoy leisurely dining with a difference, seated on the original pew benches in the dining area – it’s a wonderful, light-filled space with views of surrounding countryside. The property is lovely and cosy, thanks to underfloor heating.

Arched doors lead to a raised gantry which goes down to a lovely outdoor courtyard area with seating. There is also additional paved area to the front with seating – from here you can hear the famous steam train, beckoning you to explore the great outdoors!

The peaceful village of Grosmont is huddled in the Esk Valley amidst woodlands and farmland. There are many stunning walks in the vicinity, including the Rail Trail, which follows George Stephenson's original railway line of 1836 from Grosmont to Goathland (3½ miles).

Today, Grosmont remains an important stopping point on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and we highly recommend the fantastic journey on a heritage steam or diesel train to either Pickering or Whitby. You can also visit the engine sheds at Grosmont for a glimpse behind the scenes – a treat for all rail enthusiasts!

Whitby itself is one of Yorkshire most beloved seaside towns, known for its iconic Abbey (inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’), fine maritime heritage, wonderful fish and chip restaurants, pretty ‘old town’ and, of course, sandy beaches.

Preacher’s Rest provides a haven of tranquility in the glorious North Yorkshire countryside, with easy access to stunning coastline.

The pretty village of Grosmont sits at the junction of the River Esk and Murk Esk in the midst of striking North Yorkshire Moors scenery. The area is characterised by its narrow roads, steep hills and scenic views over valleys of patchwork fields and wide-open expanses of moorland. Grosmont itself lies in the ‘Heartbeat Country’ and is famous for being the home of the North York Moors Steam Railway. The Railway has been preserved and run by enthusiasts since 1973 and today carries upwards of 300,000 passengers a year. The village has a general store, post office, book shop, art gallery, cafes and a pub. It makes a great base for exploring the many pretty farming villages along the Esk Valley and the wider North York Moors National Park, as well as the North Yorkshire Coastline with characterful harbour towns and villages.

It was really well equipped, very spacious and had a lovely balcony for looking out over the valley. Very relaxing location, with only the sounds of wildlife and steam engines, which we thoroughly enjoyed. It was centrally located for getting to lots of fantastic places and sights within the area, lots of walks from the doorstep and very convenient for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and village centre. We would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone.

Done to a high spec. It has everything you need. The beds are very cozy. There is an outside sitting area with a view over the valley. Anyone with mobility problems might struggle with the curved staircase though. We loved it and would definitely book again when available.
