Pickering and the Surrounding Areas

There is just so much to enjoy during your stay. Explore the town which offers a full range of amenities with independent shops, great pubs and an array of cafes and restaurants. Just a five minute walk from Robin Cottage is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway which was used for years in the filming of Heartbeat. It was also used in the filming of Harry Potter's 'The Philosophers Stone'. Hop aboard and take a nostalgic 24 mile journey through the beautiful national park as far as Whitby. Delve into history and visit Pickering Castle and Beck Island Museum. Book lovers will enjoy a visit to Yorkshire Quality Books, (next to the Fortune Inn), which stocks an incredible range of pre-loved books at reasonable prices. Visit the Church of St Peter and St Paul situated at the top of Market Place to see the amazing medieval wall paintings.

Pickering is ideally located to explore the seaside towns of Whitby (where you can sample some of the best fish and chips in the country) and Scarborough. Both York and Harrogate are a 40 minute drive away. The regular Coastliner bus service from Leeds to Whitby is said to the most scenic bus route in the country.

Pickering Library at The Ropery holds a good stock of information leaflets detailing all the local attractions such as Eden Camp, Flamingo Land, Sea World and Dalby Forest which is brilliant for outdoor activities for adventurers of all ages. There are 13 walking trails, 4 running trails and 55 miles of cycle routes, and much more.

Explore the charming nearby villages (and their pubs!) of Hutton-Le-Hole, Appleton-Le-Moors, Sinnington, Thorton-Le-Moors (Bangers and Cash fame) and Lastingham with the ancient Church of St Mary with its rare crypt which is said to be unique architecturally for England and possibly the world.

The picturesque market town of Helmsley is just 13 miles from Pickering and home to its own magnificent castle, a beautiful walled garden, and arts centre, the Helmsley Brewing Company, an open-air swimming pool, and the breath-taking Duncombe Park with its National Centre for Birds of Prey. Further afield, you’ll find Scarborough, where you will find the attractions of Scarborough Open-Air Theatre, Rotunda Museum, the sea life centre, Scarborough Castle, Scarborough Beach, and Peasholm Park. Robin Cottage is the idea base to

rest and relax after busy days spent exploring and discovering.

This charming market town is the official entry point to the breathtakingly gorgeous North York Moors National Park, which is home to the Heartbeat countryside. You may ride the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway and visit several of the filming locations from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's definitely worth your time to check out the Beck Isle Museum, which houses an impressive collection of black and white photographs and exhibitions of rural life. The North York Moors offer a wide variety of terrain for hikers, including rolling hills, valleys, rivers, and plentiful wildlife; meanwhile, both York and the Heritage Coast are within a half-hour drive. Overall, a perfect place to spend a vacation unwinding and rejuvenating.

I really enjoyed walking out the back through the allotments. Beds very comfy. Thank you for a great holiday.

However the fact that the main oven was broken and replaced with a tiny table top oven and we weren’t informed of this before we arrived was not acceptable. We had brought all our things for Christmas dinner and the weekend to cook and was made impossible by this. If we’d known we could have done something about it and prepared differently. Or more likely changed the booking to another property.
