About this property

Oak Tree Barn is an endearing, detached stone barn in a quiet cul-de-sac set in the chocolate box village of Thornton Le Dale. Only 2 miles from the famous railway town of Pickering offering further eating, drinking and shopping options. Built to a high standard, the beautiful barn provides the perfect romantic retreat for couples or families wanting to explore both the nearby coastal towns of Whitby and Filey and the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park. Offering first-class accommodation, the barn is warm and inviting, retaining charm and character, with high pitched ceilings, exposed timbers and stone walls. The spacious sitting room in this barn has two large, coach house style windows with luxurious oak floors and doors. Wonderfully furnished to a high standard, the barn has a lovely contemporary but homely feel and will be a pleasure to come back to after a day spent exploring. Outside, is a sunny patio, whilst the private, enclosed, south facing garden provides plenty of space along with the shelter of the old oak tree where one can sit with a glass of wine and watch the sun set. Oak Tree Barn lies paces away from the centre of one of the most picturesque Yorkshire villages, with an array of interesting shops, tea rooms. There are also two local inns, both serving food, fish and chip shop, pizza takeaway and the trendy “Hip and Square” bike shop that has a bar and outside space serving food. From this base there are many nearby walks, both in the Forge Valley and Dalby Forest, which has numerous cycling tracks for all abilities; a short drive brings you to popular Scarborough, with its sandy beaches, restaurants and shops. There are numerous walks straight from the door, while the nearby bustling town of Pickering hosts the terminus of the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which winds its way through heather clad moors to Grosmont and Whitby. Malton, dubbed the food capital of the UK with its monthly food festivals, is easily accessible by car and other local attractions include Dalby Forest, with its biking and walking tracks, Duncombe Park, Castle Howard and the pretty market town of Helmsley. With the seaside town of Whitby just a short drive and the spectacular scenery of the national park to discover, the well-placed Oak Tree Barn provides an excellent base any time of the year.

One of the North York Moors National Park's most beautiful villages, Thornton-le-Dale, is just two miles east of Pickering in the Dalby Forest. Walking, biking, and nature-loving enthusiasts will be in heaven at this idyllic location at the head of a valley. It is only a 13-mile drive to Scarborough or a 20-mile drive to Whitby, both of which are top-notch seaside resorts in the UK. Further afield,  York and Castle Howard provide all the history and culture a traveller could ask for. Each of the nearby market towns of Pickering, Malton, Kirbymoorside and Helmsley are great destinations and host a variety of summer events, including festivals and shows. You can spend a day exploring the National Park and the coastline. It's easy to get to the North York Moors National Park because it's right next door.

We are intending on going back very soon although we are told they're booked right up until October, so it looks like we will be having another break in the autumn. Tina and Vanessa, who own this lovely house have been very attentive and nothing was too much trouble, lovely people who are dog friendly which is a biggie for me as my pooch is going to holiday with us. Thank you Tina and Vanessa.

There was plenty of room in this property for the 4 of us and we felt even if there were 6 of us there would still be plenty of room. The hosts were really helpful and friendly and the welcome pack was really amazing. The local area was really great as there are shops, pubs, takeaways etc. I would book at the pubs for food though as these do get busy. If you are a keen walker you can easily navigate to Pickering and Dalby Forest taking in the beautiful Yorkshire scenery straight from the Barn. There are also plenty of local shorter walks. All in all it was a lovely break we had.
