Sorry, no hen or stag parties.. The Engine Room is a modern, 21st-century conversion of a 1924 mill turbine room, which has many unique and attractive features. The once working, 15ft long water turbine engine is still in place as a feature within the living room, and will be 100 years old in 2024! The Engine Room is part of Scalegill Mill, which was built in 1795 as a cotton mill. One of eight properties, it forms a small quiet community and is located in the heart of the picturesque Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The living space of The Engine Room is open plan with wonderful views of the countryside. The décor is colourful, warm and fun, with pieces of attractive artwork and large feature mirrors. There are two colourful velvet Chesterfield-style sofas and a matching chair, plus a large gas log-effect fire. Spot the glass porthole showing the water which used to run under the mill. From the dining room, with its large table for up to 6 guests, there is an amazing, large hobbit-style hole built into the mill wall which leads to the main hallway. Believe it or not, there is a Series 2 1978 Land Rover built into the wall as a cupboard with working tailgate lights.

Wander through to the bedrooms where you can choose from a variety of places to rest your head for the night. On the ground floor is a kingsize room with touch lamps, a relaxation area with cushions and double doors leading to a decked area overlooking the river, hillside and woodland. On the lower ground floor, there are two more fantastically fun and quirky bedrooms. The kingsize room has a woodland theme, with touch lamps again, a dressing area and en-suite wet room with shower and colourful lights. The third bedroom has a bunk bed, lovely artwork and more fun features.

Set in idyllic surroundings, with 8 acres of shared gardens and woodland, which is host to many wonderful species of birds and wildlife. There are heron’s, otters, kingfishers, dippers and sometimes deer that may be spotted in the woodland.

Guests can enjoy exploring the footpaths through the woodland and around the mill pond which leads to the National Park Footpath, this can then take you to Malham. There are so many beautiful walks in the surrounding area and an abundance of great shops, markets, pubs and restaurants in places such as Grassington, Skipton and Settle, all around a 25-minute drive away.

A brilliantly cottage to spend your holiday at. Quirky, comfy and so much to explore inside. My grandkids absolutely loved it. A great base to explore the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. Great local restaurants/pubs to try out, farm shops for great local produce. I would definitely recommend the Engine Room to all my friends and family. The grandkids want to go back and I don't blame them. Thanks to Stephen and his family for taking the time to send so much information on places to visit locally and further afield.

This property and it's location are absolutely fabulous. We are an older couple who like stunning scenery and walking, and a comfy bed and sofa. I would still unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone with children over 5 though, as it's colourful, interesting, well-equipped, spacious and the disco shower and porthole in the floor couldn't fail to keep children happy! I wish I could bring my grandchildren to it, but I think the journey would be a little too far for them from the south coast where we live. Really loved it and hope to return.
