A short stroll will bring you to the heart of Great Haywood, which is situated at the confluence of the Rivers Sow and Trent and the junction of the Trent and Mersey and Staffordshire and Worcestershire canals. For a memorable day out, hire a canal barge from Anglo Welsh, where you can try your hand at something new and experience the quirks of life aboard a narrowboat; equipped with all of the necessities, including a fridge and a bathroom, you'll be sure to find everything you need for an enjoyable day out with a difference. If that's not your thing, you may decide to indulge in a spot of breakfast with a scenic view at the award-winning Canalside Farm, Shop & Cafe before embarking on one of many short and delightful walks that start here, or for those enjoying something more strenuous, you could join the Staffordshire Way, the Way for the Millennium, the Heart of England Way or the Cross Britain Way from this locality. Located outside the Canalside café is Willow Cruses, where you can indulge in a spot of afternoon tea or fish and chips aboard a traditional narrowboat named Lurcher, accommodating up to 12 passengers in its welcoming cabin, the narrowboat frames amazing views and scenery of the Staffordshire canals while cruising along at a leisurely pace. In the evening you could spend some time locally at the Clifford Arms just 300 metres away; they offer a fine selection of cask-conditioned ales and guest beers together with a wide choice of freshly prepared, value for money meals and snacks. The pub has been a popular local as well as a stopping-off point for boaters, walkers and cyclists for many years and it is dog friendly. A short walk from the property is Shugborough Hall NT, which you will access by Essex Bridge, the Grade 1 listed and longest existing packhorse bridge over the River Trent. The stately home of Shugborough was the former home of the Earls of Lichfield and latterly Patrick Lichfield the Royal photographer. It is said that JRR Tolkien who briefly lived in Great Haywood was inspired by the home and surroundings when he wrote The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Cannock Chase is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of England’s finest landscapes, and the jewel of Staffordshire. Well known and loved for its scenery, wildlife and rich history, it offers superb walking, cycling and horse-riding in a tranquil and peaceful setting. The mountain bike tracks, ‘Follow the dog’ and the ‘Monkey Trail’ are particularly popular to visitors as is the Zip line and adventure course of ‘Go Ape’ within the forest. Venture further afield to the lake of Chasewater where avid outdoor adventurers can make a splash and try their hand at the variety of water sports on offer. Make a scenic car journey to the historic county market town of Stafford to tour the stunning Tudor building of The Ancient High House, home to a remarkable collection of period furniture and housing the Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum. The Grade II listed ruins of Stafford Castle are also worth a visit, consisting of an inner and outer bailey, as well as woodlands for a green walk. Alternatively, head over to the bustling city of Lichfield, home of Samuel Johnson and the dramatic Lichfield Cathedral, the Garrick Theatre and plenty of lovely restaurants, pubs and shops to visit. Within 30 minutes’ drive from the cottage you can visit Alton Towers, Drayton Manor Park, The National Memorial Arboretum and Trentham Gardens or for those of you who like shopping the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet at Cannock.
