Guests say

Hillgate House is a well-loved cottage praised for its peaceful location, cleanliness, and dog-friendly garden. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches and comfortable furnishings, making it a cosy retreat. The absence of Wi-Fi and some amenities is noted, but the charm and tranquillity of the property often outweigh these concerns.

The cottage receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning its tidy and well-maintained state. One isolated comment about out-of-date food items prevents a perfect score.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity and proximity to nature and walks, though one review mentions noise from a nearby facility. The peaceful setting and wildlife are recurrent positive points.

Comfort is consistently commended, with guests finding the beds and furnishings pleasant. However, a few remarks about the sofas and the size of the kitchen suggest there is room for improvement.

Facilities are generally well-received, especially the garden and walks. Criticisms include the lack of Wi-Fi, freezer, and hot water issues, indicating some areas could benefit from updates or additions.

While guests often mention appreciating the thoughtful touches, there is no specific reference to gifts being provided. Therefore, it is not possible to score this category accurately.

About this property

A detached 18th century stone-built farmhouse, standing in half an acre of enclosed grounds in the hamlet of Hemford, close to the Welsh Borders in the area known as The Marches. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, this traditional cottage offers simple and comfortable accommodation with a cosy atmosphere. The property boasts a wealth of original beams, a warm and welcoming sitting room with cast iron multi-fuel stove and a large garden, perfect for dining alfresco whilst enjoying the views of the nearby Callow and Corndon Hills. The garden also boasts a Shepherd's Hut which is ideal as a quiet retreat or for watching wildlife. Hillgate House makes a wonderful base from which to enjoy walking, cycling and horse riding, or visiting the historic towns of Shrewsbury, Bishop's Castle and Ludlow. With many attractions within easy reach amid scenic countryside, this is an ideal location for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

It is situated close to the Welsh Marches, the border between England and Wales, and these rolling hills are ideal for walking or cycling, especially as there are characterful villages and ancient castles to be found throughout. The market town of Bishop's Castle is nearby and here you can enjoy their weekly market or simply soak up the scenery from one of the many excellent pubs and restaurants. Hemford is also well-placed for many of Shropshire's main attractions, such as historic Shrewsbury, the charming town of Ludlow or the imposing Stokesay Castle. We have a dog and having a totally enclosed garden, as well as being away from neighbours, she could roam to her hearts content without us having to keep her on the lead! Absolutely lovely place to be.
