In the 16th century, the cottage started its life as a simple timber, wattle and daub, thatched property, with a hole in the roof acting as a chimney. Families would sleep in the upper space, using a makeshift ladder, whilst animals would sleep downstairs. During the 17th century, a staircase would have been made, to give better access to the upper floor. The cottage was extended in the 18th century, when a bread oven was installed in the inglenook fireplace. This is what gave the cottage its name Batchcott (bread supplied/cottage). In the 1930s the cottage was further extended to become a ‘proper’ house. It was then modernised in 1978 as a granny annexe.
The town of Ludlow lies in the shadow of the 13th-century Ludlow Castle which regularly holds events and is a must day out for guests stopping at the property. The town itself also boasts an array of shops, bars and restaurants for guests to enjoy.
Ludlow is at the start of the Mortimer Trail, a long-distance path to Kington on the Herefordshire/Wales border and boasts stunning views throughout. There are also breathtaking walks and views nearby, out from the Clee Hill.
After a day sightseeing and enjoying all that Shropshire has to offer, why not sit out in the private gardens at the property, with a glass of wine, and enjoy the peace and tranquillity that the location offers? The Cottage boasts a large rear garden with small terrace, lawn and summerhouse, and bird watchers will delight in the number of species visiting the garden. We had a lovely couple of days in the cottage. Everything was perfect, the owners were very welcoming and helpful. The location was beautiful. The local community pub was really good, the food was excellent. The cottage itself was gorgeous. Very well equipped and decorated to a high standard.Would definitely recommend it and would stay there again .

From the moment we turned down the winding country lane and saw the thatched roof of The Cottage peeking through the trees, we knew we were in for something special. We were greeted with a warm welcome pack (a lovely touch) and immediately impressed by how the cottage retains its character whilst offering all the modern comforts. The mix of exposed beams, wood-burner, and French doors opening onto the garden creates a truly inviting atmosphere. The kitchen is well-equipped: electric oven, induction hob, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine – everything you need to prepare meals comfortably. The enclosed garden is a real highlight. With garden furniture, lawn and a summerhouse, it’s perfect for morning coffees or lazy afternoons outside. Bird watchers will love how many species visit the garden.Richards Castle feels wonderfully remote, but you’re still close enough to Ludlow to enjoy all its attractions: shops, restaurants, the castle itself, local walking trails and moreOur stay at The Cottage was one of the most memorable holidays. Whether you want a romantic getaway, a peaceful retreat with friends, or just to explore beautiful Shropshire from a charming base, this cottage delivers. You’ll feel transported back in time by day, and warm, comfortable, and utterly relaxed by night. We can’t wait to return. Highly recommended.
