About this property

A lovely cottage rich with history, located on the edge of open countryside

Few buildings can claim such a rich and diverse historical contribution to their local parish as The Old School House, and it’s found in one of South Devon’s most beautiful settings for a relaxing holiday. Originally commissioned by Lord and Lady Churston in 1865, the school building was used to billet US officers during wwii, as a parish meeting place and more recently as a village post office, before finally becoming a warm and welcoming home.

The building itself is Grade II listed and constructed of local stone in a Tudor style, it has been lovingly restored and now combines original features and much character, with practical modern conveniences. One of the property’s most interesting points is the dining room, which was originally the main classroom but is now a vast dining or games room more akin to a banquet hall!

With a vaulted ceiling, mezzanine and ample space, the dining area makes the perfect room for extended families or groups of friends to host grand celebratory meals, or for the whole clan to spread out and relax with games in front of the log burner on a cosy autumn afternoon.

The location is perfect and the area's a country pub lover and dog walker's paradise! Not only do you have a highly regarded Inn on the door step, but the South West Coast Path and several renowned beaches are just a pleasant walk across the golf course. There is also a fully enclosed private pet friendly garden.

A short walk from the house is the excellent Churston Farm Shop plus a garden store and popular café. The ferry to Dartmouth is a five minute drive and this is one of the best locations possible for reaching all the attractions of Torbay, including the rustic charm of Brixham with its growing reputation as a gastro hub.

This is a superb destination for lovers of character and history to spend their time, from the solid elm doors and working bell tower, to the original school coat hooks in the entrance hall, it has personality and charm by the bucket load.

The Old School House is annexed to The School Masters Cottage which is an entirely separate two bedroom cottage of the same style, quality and architectural merit. Both properties may be let together to provide larger families or groups of friends with 3/4 double and 2/4 twin rooms.

What a lovely place, very homely and Breeze , our Border Terrier (Warrick) thinks you are a very lucky dog to be able to live here when your mum and dad move here permanently

Gorgeous house - we loved the welcome of the flowers and prosecco! Very well equipped. 9/10 for cleanliness and 10/10 for likelihood to recommend to a friend

We stayed here for a week and had a fantastic time, the property had everything and more that we needed, we were welcomed by flowers, milk, tea bags, coffee and sugar and also Proscecco chilling in the fridge. The house was full of character and was a delight to stay in. Would love to book again in the very near future.
