About this property

A historic and charming house oozing with character and period features

Few buildings can claim such a rich and diverse historical contribution to their parish community as Churston Old School House. It is a well-known and much admired house locally, which is now for the first time, available as a wonderfully relaxing place for groups of friends and families to congregate for lazy holidays, action packed short breaks and special occasions.

Churston Old School House is in fact two beautiful cottages that are side by side and they seamlessly merge into one large and very interesting dwelling, offering accommodation for ten guests across five bedrooms.

The building itself is Grade II listed and constructed of local stone in a Tudor style, it has been lovingly restored and now combines original features and much character, with practical modern conveniences. The former main classroom is now a fantastic and vast dining or games room that is more akin to a banquet hall with vaulted celing, mezzanine and a wood burner for cosy nights in.

The surrounding area is perfect and it is a country pub and dog walkers paradise. Not only do you have a highly regarded Inn on the door step, but the South West Coast Path and several renowned beaches are a pleasant stroll across the golf course. There are two enclosed private pet friendly garden areas which are also perfect for hide and seek.

A short walk from the house is the excellent Churston Farm Shop plus a garden store and popular café. The ferry to Dartmouth is a five minute drive. Lupton Manor House is an absolute gem and is within walking distance, a delightful setting for a cream tea, a peaceful walk around the grounds or perhaps a wedding!

This is a superb destination for lovers of character and history. From the solid elm doors and working bell tower, to the original school coat hooks in the entrance hall, it has personality and charm by the bucket load and will leave a lasting impression on all guests lucky enough to stay.

Our holiday was excellent, the Old School House at Churston was fantastic for families, and the experience of staying in what was an old School was great fun for the children, I had to pretend to be a Victorian Headmaster. The naughty stool in the main hall which is the dining area in the school house was put to good use and the children really enjoyed playing Schools. The property is made up of two dwellings that can be joined together via locking doors. It is furnished with many period pieces and most comfortable with plenty of places to creep off and find some solitude if you want. The gardens are large and well kept as well as being child friendly. There is an excellent hotel in Churston village where you can have a quiet drink in the garden, the interior is decorated with armour and period paintings and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. The property was well equipped and we couldn't fault it. All in all great value for money we'll definitely be staying there again.

Firstly, a few minus points: The heating system was a little confusing and even though we were lucky with a mild spell at the end of October, the Dining Hall was struggling to meet a comfortable temperature at times. Although generally well equipped, the interiors of the kitchen cupboards could have been smartened up and, for a party of ten, crockery proved to be inadequate at times. The bedrooms were all of good size but some lacked hanging space/wardrobes. Some of our adults felt that the beds should have been larger (There were no big people in our group !) And the plus side: Overall, our party were very happy to spend a week in such a lovely house and I had positive feedback from son and daughter and their families. Having taken the whole of the property, there was plenty of room for everyone to relax, the furniture was very comfortable and the children had an amazing amount of space. We all valued the provision of the lovely extra touches including flowers, wine and biscuits. Everyone, including the children, said they would like to come back

A fantastic property, which is in a perfect location for a large family holiday. There were three generations of the family totalling eleven in all. The property splits nicely into two, with separate kitchens and the ability to put older (or younger) members away from any noise of the main house. The extremely large dining room made it easy for us all to eat at the same table. As we were there for a 70th birthday celebration, this was a fantastic bonus. I would highly recommend this property for a large group wishing to combine a family occasion with a holiday destination with lots to explore.
