About this property

On the fringes of Exmoor National Park and on the banks of the river Barle in Dulverton Somerset, is this beautifully styled detached cottage. Completely renovated, this lovely cottage provides an exceptional base for friends or families looking to escape to this wonderful part of rural Somerset. Enter into a newly fitted kitchen with original flag floors and appointed with everything you'll need, before passing through to the bright and spacious sitting room where you'll find a wood burning stove for cosy evenings in and comfortable sofas to relax on. The dining area is located in a lovely conservatory style room with views over the garden and ample seating for families to gather together for an evening meal or a hearty breakfast. From here, there are two steps down leading to a twin bedroom and a shower room adjacent to it. The cottage boasts two separate staircases, each leading to a sumptuous bedroom, one with a kingsize bed and a twin room. These are served by a spacious family bathroom. Outside there is a lawned garden with a neat patio and a table and chairs. There could be no greater pleasure than to simply sit and unwind with a refreshing beverage or dine alfresco whilst listening to the current babbling along nearby. The town of Dulverton rests on the edge of the Exmoor National Park and hosts a selection of independent shops and supermarkets for all manner of amenities, as well as some pubs and restaurants if you don't fancy cooking one evening. Exmoor National Park is home to a number of fascinating trails for walking, hiking or cycling opportunities and the area is recognised for its abundance of wildlife, including deer, otters, bats and dormice. Tarr Steps, a medieval stone clapper bridge across the River Barle located 4 miles from Dulverton, is well worth a visit. Further afield, you'll find traditional seaside fun at Minehead and Blue Anchor Bay. Ideal for lovers of both coast and country, Shepherds Cottage is a wonderful retreat.

Dulverton is the southern gateway to the Exmoor National Park, a small town standing between the rivers Barle and Exe, which meet further down the valley. Dulverton has some quaint narrow streets weaving between fine Victorian buildings and a three arched bridge crossing the river leading to riverside walks. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs in Dulverton and in the square is the Exmoor National Park visitor centre and art gallery, offering plenty of inspiration for exploring the vast expanse of the moor on foot, on horseback or from behind the wheel. Why not try an off road safari around Exmoor to see red deer, wild ponies and rare birds? Exmoor has been designated as a Dark Sky Reserve, where the light pollution is low and plenty of stargazing can be done. Near to Dulverton is the majestic lake at Wimblewall Country Park, the first Dark Skies Discovery Centre on Exmoor. Wimblewall is also a premier trout fishing location, and provides tuition in numerous water sports, including sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Further afield the North Somerset coastline has sandy beaches at Minehead, picturesque harbours and plenty of wild walking around Porlock Weir. A fabulous holiday destination for all those enjoying outdoor activities, dramatic landscapes and wildlife.

Just a few negatives about this stay: The towel rail in upstairs bathroom was broken and just one bracket left sticking out of the wall, which could have caused an injury. We had to find bedding to make up a bed in ground floor bedroom which wasn’t ideal. The shower in ground floor shower room could do with the tile grout thoroughly cleaning. Not a single toilet roll to be found in any of the bathrooms, we always bring our own, but it would have been a nice touch. The driveway is dangerous to pull out of, the hedge needs to be cut back to give a safer exit. Overall a lovely stay, but feel standards had slipped since our previous visits.

The kitchen had everything we wanted (and more!), the beds we’re comfortable and the whole cottage was beautifully decorated. We loved Shepherd’s Cottage and will definitely look to booking again.
