Great Torrington is an unspoilt town built on high ground above the River Torridge, and is a fifteen minute drive from the spectacular North Devon coast at Westward Ho! With historic links to the Civil War, the “Torrington 1646” attraction at Castle Hill in the town gives an interesting insight to the Roundheads and Cavaliers. Another leading tourist attraction is Dartington Crystal where visitors can see craftsmen blowing and shaping glass, follow the history of glassmaking and buy some beautiful pieces. The town has a good selection of individual shops, a friendly atmosphere, and some good inns. About a mile from Great Torrington is the spectacular RHS Rosemoor Gardens with arboretum and herbaceous borders in a breathtaking setting by the River Torridge. There are many villages to visit on the North Devon coast including picturesque Clovelly built on a steep hillside above the sea, beautiful Appledore with it’s colourful fishermen’s cottages, famous Lynton and Lynmouth with the cliff-top railway, and Hartland Point with its breathtaking sea and coastal views. The diverse beaches of North Devon are not far away including; Westward Ho!, Instow, Saunton Sands, Woolacombe and Croyde, to name a few. Lundy Island, lying just 10 miles off the coast of North Devon is home to a fascinating array of birds and seals, and can be reached on Lundy's own boat from Bideford Quay. 5 miles from the main road along a very narrow, winding and, in places, steep lane which is not signposted from the main road. It is very bumpy and muddy especially at this time of year. We were not aware of its accessibility issues and feel it should have been mentioned somewhere in the description. We found the cabin to be very clean and well equipped, the owner was friendly and welcoming and the setting very peaceful with many birds and squirrels who visited frequently. We made only very limited use of the hot tub finding the 37 degree setting rather too cool for our preference and the tub’s inner surface rather slippery. The experience was valuable if only to show us that at our age we need to look for more urban settings for Spring breaks in future!
