Bishops Tawton is a small village located within two miles of Barnstaple; North Devon’s regional capital and ancient river-port town at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw flowing into the Bristol Channel. The lovely waterside village of Instow, where you can enjoy the quiet inlet with sand dunes and a sandy beach along with a selection of pubs, restaurants and the excellent John’s of Instow delicatessen, is just seven miles to the west. Just across the water is Appledore, where you’ll find plenty of quaint village streets to simply wander and take in the surroundings and traditional fisherman’s cottages. The historic port town of Bideford is just a further two miles away and offers a taste of traditional North Devon life with its weekly pannier market, much like Barnstaple’s. Some of the best beaches in the UK, like Saunton Sands, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and Croyde are easily reached by car from the property and are popular with surfers, windsurfers and beach lovers alike. There are plenty of local attractions and amenities nearby, including a leisure centre with swimming pool, purpose-built tennis centre, bowling alley, trampoline centre and an array of adventure and activity places to enjoy. The region offers family attractions such as the Big Sheep and Milky Way theme parks, Dartington Crystal Factory, Tapeley Park, Rock Park. The Tarka Trail goes past the front of the property giving easy access to all the walking and cycling that this offers, following a disused railway line spanning from Barnstaple to Braunton northwards and all the way to the fringes of Dartmoor National Park in the south. Other stunning areas to consider visiting whilst in North Devon are Lynton & Lynmouth, Valley of the Rocks and Exmoor National Park to name just a few. And then there’s the South West Coast Path which offers, in North Devon alone, 90 miles of walks with amazing and dramatic coastal views. Whether you’re seeking the perfect base to explore all that North Devon has to offer or the perfect getaway location to relax and unwind in complete comfort whilst making the most of the one-acre garden, West Brae is the perfect choice for a family of four or two couples. Beach 8 miles.

We enjoyed our stay at West Brae. The location is great for visiting some of the best beaches in North Devon - Putsborough, Woolacombe, Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! were all within a relatively short drive away. The bungalow itself was very clean and well equipped and was well presented. The garden was of course, the star! Absolutely fantastic, especially if you have a dog holidaying with you, like us. Pretty much Labrador heaven!! The views from the garden, over the fields beyond was lovely, especially when the sun shone. We had a wander around Barnstaple which is a short distance away by car and also Braunton (which is smaller but prettier). We spent most of the time on the beaches with the dog (October - so very few restrictions) but a lot of these beaches allow dogs on in certain parts all year round. Id recommend West Brae as a base for exploring North Devon and its many beaches. Id like to visit again in summer to make the most of that garden and the dog agrees!!

West Brae was a game of two halves. The outside needs a lot of maintenance on the building and on arrival we wondered what we had come to. ( First impressions count)Inside a different story. Lovely kitchen and lounge. The view was stunning. The bedrooms were nice and everything you needed. The garden is huge with a 3 carriage train running at the bottom every hour( not a problem). The location was great. You could walk into Barnstaple along the river and cycle track passing through a great park where park run is held every Saturday. You could easily access Instow Bideford Appledore Croyde bay Woolacombe. The Tarka trail was easily picked up at Barnstaple or Instow. The parking was a slight problem. No parking at the property so had to park on the pavement to load and unload then down the busy road to park up permanently about 250yds away. ( Distance not a problem but very busy road) Be aware of the steps down from the gate to the property.Would recommend to family and friends but a few things need to be up graded slightly and a lot on the outside.Location and view topped it all
