Welcome Cottage is a nicely presented cottage, which through clever design fits the essentials for daily living into a very compact space, more compact than we’d appreciated from the photos and description. Owners were welcoming and popped in on us, providing a wheelie bin for the weekly refuse and recycling collection. They also remotely adjusted the heating when we found the cottage a little cool in the late afternoon/evening and had used up the wood provided for the wood burner. Sadly the weather was poor during our stay meaning we spent more time than we’d usually do at the cottage; and we’d wrongly assumed with it being pet friendly there would be some secure outdoor space for the dogs but unfortunately there isn’t, so every toilet break meant putting them on lead and taking them on a walk. Our dogs are elderly so it’s not uncommon for an overnight toilet break to be needed, so having no secure outdoor space was an added complication we’d not anticipated. In order to keep dogs off furniture and beds, realistically they can only sleep overnight in the dining hallway area which is a cold tiled floor, so would advise dog owners to bring a raised dog bed ideally (though space is limited). The kitchen is very compact with minimal useable worktop space so using the hob and oven and then plating up is a matter of juggling hot trays, pans, plates, with room realistically for one person at a time in the kitchen. It’s unusual not to find a microwave in a kitchen these days but there simply isn’t room to do so in this kitchen. We were pleased to find a small freezer compartment in the top of the fridge, though the fridge is mounted in a cupboard above the washing machine so makes reaching the compartment quite a stretch. The master bedroom is spacious and we found the bed and pillows exceptionally comfortable; it was slightly disconcerting to find the coffin-shaped inset cupboard door appears backlit at night, presumably because a boiler and other electrical items are housed in it. We were hoping previous reviews about the comfort of the lounge sofa were exaggerated but sadly not and the same discomfort is true of the armchair. Once upon a time these would have been solid, good quality items but through use they have aged and are now very firm (no give), sagging and quickly uncomfortable to sit in. We happened to have a memory foam cushion with us, but even using that didn’t help and we both ended up with painful backs and dreading having to spend time there. With the weather being so poor, managing dogs in the absence of secure outdoor space, coupled with enough of the uncomfortable seating, we chose to leave a day early. The cottage is set in a rural area with narrow lanes which have sadly suffered damage in recent weather so there are potholes to negotiate but we found it a reasonable drive to link to Tiverton and the major roads that connect from there. In better weather I’m sure it would be an enjoyable area to explore.

Bedrooms Great. Warmth Great. Hot water Great. Peaceful.Bathroom Horrible, dark gloomy, looked dirty, shower not moveable, BLACK ….didnt feel comfortable in there. Water didn’t drain away properly…..why would I want to use a scraper to take water out ? Really out of keeping in an old cottage style property. Curtains horrible..very poor. Kitchen tap….CRAZY…..why ?No instructions for wood burner which looked very dodgy….needs some attention.Felt general ‘instructions’ were rather bossy. However, We enjoyed ourselves despite the potholes in the lanes which were frankly dangerous. Weather was dire but we loved the local walks.
