Heaven on earth! Maybe slightly helped by arrival in one of the sunniest weeks of the year so far, but to step out of the car to beautiful views down into Sidbury in the valley, mature trees to the other side of the house, and then to go around and see across the lawn to the sea: beautiful. Castle Hill House was the perfect home for 11 of us, spanning 3 generations, for a week, and also allowed us to cater one night to more family staying nearby, all fitting to sit for food in the generous kitchen/dining space. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans, crockery, glasses, more than enough, and while we did make use of the electric oven/hob on occasion as well, the Aga was extremely simple to use and cooked things spot on for us. Helpful small details were there - an oven thermometer, kitchen scales - and that little bonus that makes a self-catering holiday easier, plus we made use of the washing machine and kitchen maid. We also did a barbecue one evening with very nice produce from Drew's, the local butchers, and had excellent fish and chips from Bloaters in Sidford (a long queue but a short wait!).Although we spent a lot of time out in Sidmouth/Jacob's Ladder, Lyme Regis, Beer, and Branscombe, we easily could have stayed all day as there was plenty of space for us to be comfortable in the house and it made both getting ready in the mornings and relaxing in the evenings simple; the number of bathrooms/toilets plus extra sinks in the rooms meant no queueing required, and the recently added games room made a good breakoff space for children and adults alike. The snooker table was used plenty, and my young children loved the old rocking horse. We used the second living room for the grand piano, a family treasure and a lovely one to play, and the piano in the main living room didn't miss out either. A fitted stairgate across the top of the main staircase was great to have for peace of mind, and the children enjoyed the second "secret" stairs, which we all made a lot of use of too. The garden was a brilliant space for all of us, with multiple places to sit with tables, soak up the sun, or go down onto the lawn to race around. We had fun working out the best spots to get our kites to fly, and aviation fans will enjoy spotting low flying aircraft occasionally heading over or along the valley (as well as a few of the pictures around the house). There were also various wildlife sightings, including deer and woodpeckers; it is such a peaceful spot. The beds were wonderfully comfortable (plenty of pillows and plush duvets), the bedrooms clean and inviting, the light pours in, and the views are astounding. The house - though grand and obviously bathed in history - was warm and welcoming and immediately made us feel at home. We really appreciated the comprehensive information pack (complete with floor plan - perfect for pre-deciding bedrooms between the few households and requesting the twin room that would work best - and local suggestions on food and trips) and hello that Ben and Emma sent before our arrival, and the warm welcome from Nick when we arrived (and the warm sourdough he dropped off midweek!). I truly hope we'll be back.
