About this property

Barley Cottage is a charming cottage on the outskirts of Axminster, close to Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast, and makes an ideal family holiday home for your Devon holiday. With off-road parking, a beautiful garden, and unique features, this cottage is an ideal location for exploring popular fossil hunting beaches and the South West Coastal Footpath, while also providing all you may need to enjoy your self-catering stay with loved ones.

Inside, the sitting room has an exposed stone fireplace with log burner to curl up in front of while watching the Smart TV, and the kitchen/diner, with its farmhouse décor, is likely to entice the group's chef to whip up a wonderful dinner to enjoy as a family at the dining table. Outside, the large garden with mature planting and impressive barbecue hut makes the perfect alfresco social place at any time of day.

Back inside, unwind in one of three well-appointed bedrooms; the double and twin are suitable for couples and youngsters, respectively, while the master bedroom, a king-size with an en-suite and a Smart TV, allows you to enjoy a relaxing morning.

Take your four-legged pals for a stroll along the River Axe or visit the charming market town of Axminster. Stroll through the town learning about its carpet-making history, which is showcased in the town’s heritage centre. The River Cottage HQ, noted for its TV show and locally produced and showcased food, is a popular eatery in the area, and for those searching for good food in a relaxed and friendly setting, The Tytherleigh Arms is hard to beat.

Only a short drive away lies the seaside resort of Lyme Regis, best known for its family friendly beaches, Cobb Harbour, town museum, and the local aquarium. Take a trip to nearby Forde Abbey where a leisurely stroll through its award-winning gardens is recommended, while animal lovers should go to the Abbotsbury Swannery, which is home to the world's only managed colony of nesting mute swans. Whatever the weather, Barley Cottage is the perfect place to stay for your next trip to Devon.

Axminster, nestled in beautiful tranquil countryside, is unquestionably a place to relax and unwind. It is one of Devon's most beautiful little villages, famous for its carpets, which are sometimes compared to Turkish examples. Axminster, located on the River Axe and easily accessible from both the West Dorset and East Devon Jurassic Coasts, offers many attractions, including many of privately owned businesses, a weekly market, and good old inns, one of which dates back 100 years and has its own resident ghost! With stunning views and the National Trust estates of Shute Barton and Loughwood Meeting House nearby, Axminster is a must-see.

The house was very clean and had everything that we needed. The garden is lovely and would be amazing to sit out in the summer (we visited in February). Really comfy beds too.

The cottage and garden are very well looked after. The garden has an amazing bbq hut, which we didn't have time to use, but next time... I have only marked down the accuracy of listing because the way garden is photographed and mentioned doesn't fully explain the reality. The garden is separated from the house by the public driveway that gives access to the other houses. While on the surface this doesn't seem an issue, if you have a dog you can't just open a door and let it out into the garden. You need to leave the house, cross the driveway, unlock the gate and then you are in. Unfortunately for us it was pouring with rain, so it just made it a little more of hassle than ideally you would want. Not a deal breaker, just good to be aware.

The 'welcome' hamper on the table was a lovely surprise and we enjoyed cooking eggs and bacon in the very well-equipped kitchen. The cottage is well located for Charmouth, Lyme Regis, River Cottage Headquarters and more! Miller's Farm shop is full of great produce, ideal for cooking in the BBQ hut which is another great experience at Barley Cottage.
