About this property

Set within the fishing village of Port Isaac on the north coast of Cornwall, Creel Cottage is a beautifully renovated property dating back to the 1800s. The building is full of character and charm and its two bedrooms make it a great choice for a family holiday or a romantic break for two. When you enter the cottage you will immediately notice the period features; slate flooring runs throughout the ground floor and exposed beams and a woodburning stove in the living/dining room make it a spot you will want to curl up and relax in. The kitchen is furnished with lots of modern amenities giving you the option to self-cater for yourself throughout the course of your stay. Take your pick between the king-size and double bedrooms on the first floor, both tastefully decorated and benefitting from exposed beams and views across the village. The family bathroom is beautifully fitted out, and includes a walk-in shower and a freestanding bath. Private parking is available at the top of the village for one car, so you can venture further afield when you fancy, or simply leave the car parked up and explore on foot. The area around Port Isaac is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the turquoise waters and rugged coastline around the village are truly spectacular. Spend time on the beach at Port Isaac or travel to nearby Port Gaverne with its sheltered and sandy beach – perfect for families with young children. The village is well stocked with shops, pubs and restaurants to drink and dine out in, and the nearby attractions of Tinatgel Castle and Doyden Castle are well worth spending a day at. Creel Cottage is a fantastic property, perfect for exploring the North Cornwall coast.

Port Isaac; one of the true Cornish treasures. A beautiful fishing village nestling in a steep sided valley, the old village in the valley remains unchanged from its days of fishing, slate export and smuggling in the previous century. An abundance of small character properties complemented by larger cliff-top retreats, can be found with easy access to the numerous restaurants and shops of the village. The sandy harbour provides an abundance of rock pools as the tide retreats. Only ten minutes drive from the beaches of Polzeath, Daymer and Rock, it is perfect for romantic and family holidays alike. There is ample parking at the top of the village.

As with previous reviews the property would benefit from some minor repairs, mainly stiff or broken window catches and there is a plentiful supply of spiders and their associated cobwebs but nothing to worry about and something that could be picked during the changeover cleaning process. The cottage is quite dark during the day as shutters have been installed which do reduce the daylight. You do need to be careful when going up or down the stairs as being a cottage they are tight and slightly narrower than conventional stairs. This may be a problem for anyone with reduced mobility. The property was obviously fully renovated some time ago and to a very high standard but this is now showing some wear and tear. The bathroom is quite large with a luxury bath and shower. The shower is a good powerful shower with an adjustable fixed head and to avoid wetting the floor best turned on once in the shower, we didn’t notice any leakage around the door as mentioned by others and there is a plentiful supply of hot water. The beds are comfortable and the bed linen and towels provided were very good quality. There is a good selection of games, folding beach chairs and buckets and spades for the kids although we didn’t have need of them. The tv works fine via the free view and internet during our stay was constant. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils but I would take your own cloths and washing up materials, bin liners and dishwasher tablets. The dishwasher contained used cups and cutlery when we arrived, presumably from the previous occupants which would have exhausted the single dishwasher tablet that was provided had we not taken some with us. The kitchen is accessed via three steps from the lounge, TAKE CARE, the bottom step into the kitchen is much narrower and lower than the other 2 and the same colour and material as the kitchen floor I mis-judged the step and took a nasty fall, so make sure you familiarise yourself with them, once you are aware it’s fine but it was not a good way to find out. (Possibly the bottom step would benefit from marker tape on its edge) The access instructions were clear with the key code to the house, as with many places in Cornwall access with the car is via a narrow street with a tight entry at the side of the lifeboat station it is possible to turn around at the top after unloading. Finding The car park space was a challenge and is found at the junction of Fore St and New Road at the LH side of the old RNLI garage (as shown on Google maps street view) this is now the Jack and Lewis shop. It is an uphill walk to the car park space and took around 8 minutes to walk up the hill at a normal walking pace. Locating and accessing the parking space took a good deal of time on arrival to locate and the contact number for the letting agent was Monday to Friday only, however being on O2 there was no signal anywhere in port Isaac so I was unable to ring to see if they have an out of hours answering service. Overall we had a great week once we had managed to get unloaded and finally find the car parking, Thankfully I was uninjured by the fall on the kitchen steps and hopefully this review will help you avoid some of the problems we encountered .

Under the table was very dusty and obviously hadn’t been swept or wiped down. Every window sill was dirty. All round the bottom of the toilet was dusty and dirty. The toilet brush looked horrible with what looked like toilet paper on it. When I go away I don’t want to feel like I’m staying somewhere that’s not clean and unfortunately that’s how I felt here. It was given a quick topical clean before arrival but when you’re paying a lot it needs to be properly cleaned after every stay. Also fyi the tap in the bathroom drips so is wasting water. We also didn’t know where the bin for recycling was or where to put glass bottles so we had to take them with us which isn’t convenient.

The cottage was beautifully decorated and had great facilities including a tumble dryer. The parking needs to be clearer on the website as this is a significant distance and for people who are not considerably fit, it is a significantly steep journey. The cottage was clean but greater attention to detail is needed such as dusting and removing cobwebs. This is a recurring issue that I have seen on other reviews and needs to be dealt with and not ignored, especially as this is a premium price to pay in the UK. All round we had a wonderful stay.
