Guests say

April Cottage in Port Isaac offers a charming stay with its excellent location close to the harbour and local amenities. Guests appreciate the property's character and the bonus of a parking space. The outdoor decking is a highlight for enjoying the surroundings, although some guests experienced temporary inconvenience due to nearby construction.

The cottage received mixed reviews regarding cleanliness. Some guests found it clean and well-presented, while others noted a persistent damp smell and instances of mould. The need for more thorough cleaning and mould treatment was suggested.

The location is highly praised for its proximity to the harbour and local attractions, with guests loving the convenience and the quiet setting at night. The steep hill access may challenge those with mobility issues, but the location's charm compensates for this.

Comfort levels are generally good, with comfortable beds and a cosy living space. However, some guests mentioned the property's dampness affecting their comfort, and taller individuals noted the low ceilings as a concern.

Facilities are adequate with a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable bedding. However, guests reported maintenance issues such as a damp smell, outdated electronics, and the need for updates in decor and furniture. The presence of a dehumidifier helped mitigate dampness for some.

There is insufficient information to assess thoughtfulness as there are no mentions of gifts or special touches provided by the hosts. Therefore, this category cannot be scored.

About this property

April Cottage is a characterful and charming former fisherman’s cottage, set within the idyllic fishing village of Port Isaac, Cornwall. Set over three storeys, April Cottage has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, making it a perfect choice for a family or for couples sharing. The sitting room is a generous size, making for the ideal spot to unwind in with the family. On nights when you don’t fancy eating out you can stay in and sit around the dining table after rustling up a gourmet meal in the well-equipped kitchen/diner. There are two bedrooms set across the first and second floors to choose from, a double room on the first floor boasting views of the village to wake up to, and a twin room on the second floor, complete with an en-suite shower room.

After a day of exploring the Cornish coast why not retire to the sitting room on the first floor to unwind and watch a spot of TV or walk out to the balcony from here and enjoy a drink on the deck whilst watching the fishing boats coming and going, an idyllic way to end the day. Port Isaac seems to expand out from the harbour and there is a warren of streets to explore, all containing charming shops, galleries, pubs, and restaurants. The most famous street has to be Squeezy Belly Alley, one of the narrowest thoroughfares in the whole of the UK, make sure to visit this local landmark during your wanderings about the village.

There are plenty of attractions to enjoy nearby; visit Merlin’s Cave in Tintagel thought to be the birthplace of the legend of King Arthur, with a commanding statue resting above the bay of the king himself. Pentargon Waterfall in Boscastle is a beautiful sight to behold amidst the natural beauty, or search the archaeological remains dotted over Bodmin Moor, with plenty of walking and cycling opportunities here. Along with fishing trips, sea safaris and the likes of Newquay, a true surfing capital, all on the card too, there’s lots to choose from. Discover all of these things and more from April Cottage in Cornwall.

Port Isaac; one of the true Cornish treasures. A beautiful fishing village nestling in a steep sided valley, the old village in the valley remains unchanged from its days of fishing, slate export and smuggling in the previous century. An abundance of small character properties complemented by larger cliff-top retreats, can be found with easy access to the numerous restaurants and shops of the village. The sandy harbour provides an abundance of rock pools as the tide retreats. Only ten minutes drive from the beaches of Polzeath, Daymer and Rock, it is perfect for romantic and family holidays alike. There is ample parking at the top of the village.

Lovely outdoor space in the evening to enjoy a glass of wine. Addressing the strong mould smell that others mentioned - we live in an old cottage and there are always issues. This is an old property, and there really needs to be a bit of an allowance for that. We found that opening/running the fan in the kitchen window and running the dehumidifier, worked wonders. The bed in the main bedroom was super comfortable (there were only two of us, so we didn't need the 3rd floor bedroom). Bedding was lovely and soft. Towels were fluffy and thick. Cottage could have been slightly cleaner, but we've been in worse. The hoover was completely full when we went to hoover on our penultimate day. We emptied it but there was minimal suction. Possibly could just be the filters needing a clean. Overall, a lovely cottage. It's an old cottage - it's lovely for what it is. We would go back.

However, it could be more comfortable and clean: there is a very un pleasant smell in the ground floor living space (I suspect mold under the carpet) so we had to keep the windows open most of the time. The teapot and some cutlery also needed to be washed with more attention. Old mold as well on the shower glass panel. No essentials (salt, sugar, tea, cooking oil, extra toilet paper, etc.); which would have been a homely nice touch. The electronic devices are also quite outdated and small, and the furnishing is very eclectic (modern mirror vs. Quaint decor) which makes the look of the cottage a bit odd. The parking space as well has a narrow space, which makes it hard to park in when having to squeeze between two big cars. I believe the stay can be nice for a couple of nights, but not ideal for a full week.
