A 400 year old cottage in the heart of Arundel, great for the Castle, antique shops, bars and restaurants
This wonderful four hundred year old cottage dating from 1612 is packed with character. Originally constructed as two cottages for brewery workers producing ale for the local and traditional ale houses of the time such as Abercrombie, it now offers very comfortable cottage accommodation for six guests. Just metres from the river and the entrance to Arundel Castle it enjoys a great central setting in this popular town. It is also a short walk from the Arundel Lido, which offers heated outdoor swimming pools for the summer months.
Although the ancient ale houses have long gone, fittingly for the name the cottage is next door to one of the many fine pubs found in Arundel. If the prospect of local ale and home cooked food on the doorstep is high on your list then staying at Brewery Cottage means you barely have to step outside!
As you enter the cottage from the street you will be immediately taken by the traditional living room with its posts and beams and feature inglenook fireplace. As Arundel is such a popular holiday destination all year round having an inglenook over winter just adds to the appeal.
The cottage is set for couples since the three bedrooms are all fitted with double beds. Two of the bedrooms are on the first floor along with the family bathroom while bedroom three is located downstairs off the kitchen. The bathroom has both a bath and separate shower cubicle, as well as a basin and WC. Adjacent to the bathroom is an upstairs cloakroom also with WC and basin.
Outside there is a private rear courtyard garden that makes a great suntrap throughout the day.
Arundel and beyond
Arundel is a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tearooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality.
Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep, which dates from the 11th century to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs, is definitely worth the effort.
During the summer the Arundel Festival is held over a ten day period and features an eclectic mix of music, drama and arts. Many homes open their doors and gardens over this period to provide a wonderful backdrop to the variety of art on show. We feature the festival under “What’s on” on the homepage of our website.
The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds, lakes and reed beds, Arundel Wildfowl and Wetland Trust attracts some of the world's most spectacular ducks, geese and swans. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise stopping off at the Black Rabbit pub or proceeding further north where the river hugs the scarp wooded slope at the foot of the Downs before reaching Amberley.
Further afield Arundel is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest.
Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby along with the cathedral city of Chichester with its excellent Festival Theatre noted for not only the quality of productions but also the fact many world premieres are featured as well.
If you fancy a day in the city, Arundel mainline station is on a direct route to London so why not mix the cosmopolitan capital with this beautiful part of Sussex.

It was a fantastic location with the pub next door, a Co-op over the road and of course the castle just down the road. Plenty of excellent restaurants and pubs and a great location for visiting family and nearby attractions. loved the private gate into the pub and the cottage garden.

We all had a fantastic stay at the cottage, we loved the fireplace and the general coziness of the place with great links to the coast and plenty to do in and around the town with some great pubs! Certainly love to come again and recommend to a friend!
