    About this property

A wonderful property accommodating ten guests, with the added luxury of a hot tub and bi-folding doors leading to a gorgeous outdoor space.
This superb detached property has been extended to provide an extremely light and spacious retreat for couples or families. Set in 2½ acres with gated entry, with partial agricultural land and sloping banks to a gently flowing stream, this is a wonderful spot to enjoy alfresco dining or relax in the state of the art spa hot tub with mood lighting, sound system and central drinks table! With families in mind, there is also an outside games room with pool table, table football and games. The huge open-plan living/dining area has plenty of natural light with full length windows and bi-folding doors across the width of the room, as well as an electric wood burner within a brick fire surround. Solid oak flooring and doors have been skilfully fitted, and there is a well-equipped kitchen with a professional chefs range with induction hob and slate tiled floor. Three of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, two of which are twin rooms, with a shared family bathroom, and on the first floor there are two en-suite bedrooms. All of the double beds are complete with luxurious Vi-Spring mattresses.

The owner (formerly a Michelin-starred chef) resides in a renowned restaurant serving fine English/French Gourmand cuisine, 800 yards away, and there are two pubs within a 5-minute drive. There is so much to do in this popular area all year round. The nearest town is Fordingbridge on the banks of the River Avon. It was recorded in the Domesday Book and the first Great Bridge, built in medieval times, is upstream from the ford and is a major feature of the town with its seven graceful arches. The town has developed into a wonderful place for visitors with its beautiful scenery, nature havens, cycleways and welcoming people. There is a museum, Alderholt Mill, dating back to the 15th century, which serves cream teas at weekends; they also offer milling demonstrations, and Braemore Church exhibits many Saxon features, and is believed to have been founded soon after. Within easy driving distance are beaches at Bournemouth, Poole, Sandbanks and Studland Bay. Also within easy reach are Poole Nature Reserve, Brownsea Island, and to the west, The Purbecks, Corfe Castle, and Jurassic coastline.

Moors Valley is a popular place to visit and is dog friendly, and offers scenic walks and excellent wildlife spotting. There are a host of recreational activities such as angling, orienteering, cycle hire, golf, Go Ape Treetop Adventure, Forest Segway, walking groups, canoeing and pétanque. Avon Heath is also nearby and is ideal for keen walkers. There are various fishing lakes (mainly carp) and golf courses in the area too. The New Forest National Park is easily accessible, which provides miles of scenic walks and a network of bridle paths and footpaths, and you can often find the ponies and cattle roaming the streets in one of the many picturesque villages. There is a waterpark not far away, as well as a leisure centre with swimming pool.

The property is very convenient for road links to the beautiful cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, National Trust homes and gardens, including Forde Abbey and Kingston Lacey, Christchurch’s harbour, Paultons Park, Adventure Wonderland and Stonehenge. Other attractions include Marwell Zoo, Monkey World, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Bovington Tank Museum, the New Forest Otter and Owl Park and maritime Southampton. Beach 12 miles. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 330 yards.

"Overall experience was excellent the whole family enjoyed a relaxing weekend with good use of the games room and the hot tub being a bonus even at this time of year"

"Great property to use for family celebration involving children. Plenty of space."

"We had a lovely stay at the Lions Retreat at the October half term. The house is spacious, comfortable and well-located with an enormous garden bordered by a stream. The stream was only shallow when we visited and hazardous only with very young children. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. However there were a few things about the property that could be improved to make the stay even better. The dishwasher is actually a pub-style glass washer and required constant filling and unpacking as it held only a few items at a time. There were no instructions when we got there, but Mike kindly came up to the house having printed some out. There were a few items of equipment that would have been very useful. As a family group with 4 children we ate in most evenings but it would have been great to have a potato peeler and a large tea-pot. Also a small sharp knife. We struggled to get any heat in the upstairs rooms despite turning up the thermostat . Fortunately it wasn't too cold and we managed without. Downstairs was heated by underfloor heating which was very responsive and comfortable. The quality of the fittings and furnishings was good, plenty of towels and comfortable beds. The jacuzzi was excellent and easy to use. The laundry room contained an extra fridge and freezer . the fridge was really useful to accommodate our overflow of milk etc.All in all a very pleasant stay but it could have been much beter with just a few little improvements."

"Very private grounds. Enjoyed hot tub and games room. TV adequate size and quality. Liked the large dining table as well. We had 8 in our party. When we arrived we all got stuck in to cleaning up, a bit dusty, lacked attention to detail in the cleanliness ( I have been to worse!) kitchen utensils, plates/pans all washed before use. Not sure why you need to have an industrial dishwasher that you have to watch and drain yourself- we didn't bother using it. The cooker took some getting used to as well. The upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms were particularly difficult to negotiate with steep eaves- you had to bend over to use the sink and I'm only 5'2. The shower door would stick and wobble. One of the showers wouldn't work properly. I was disappointed with the cleanliness and some of the equipment however the space was excellent, indoor and outdoor."

"We all had a lovely family weekend holiday at the shandwick cottage, it was equipped with everything you needed and more! Would definitely recommend! Dog friendly too! The center of the new forest was only a 20 minute drive away with lots to see and do for all!"

"A bottle of wine does not make a welcome pack!!!"
    Gerard ‐ 25 Aug 2018
"Lovely place on the edge of the New Forest, short 30-40 min drive to the beach or walking in New Forest just a 5 min drive.Alternatively can just relax in the hot tub at the house. Walking distance to a couple of pubs. Would need a good torch for the walk back though."
    Claire ‐ 11 Aug 2018
"An excellent house fully and thoughtfully equipped, grounds lovely and the stream much appreciated by our dog. Had some fantastic meals at the Three Lions. Would thoroughly recommend."
    Paul ‐ 3 Aug 2018
"Lovely home and run by lovely people. Top marks. A 9 for local amenities as I had a couple of teenagers with me and had to drop off and pick up at pubs. Couldn’t get a taxi. All else Brill"

"We received a very warm welcome from Mike on arrival. Location is excellent for all New Forest activities. The house easily accommodated our family of 9 parents, children and grandchildren and dog. Very well maintained and equipped. Ample space outside for children and dog to play and games room excellent. Hot tub and changing room were well used. Also used were the playstation and board games provided. 5 minutes car ride to Fordingbridge where there was ample shops to get supplies. We would recommend this accommodation without reservation."
    Karen ‐ 25 May 2018
"A beautiful cottage really pleasant layout and grounds, made for a fantastic break. We used the hot tub, barbecue, outside table and chairs and sat down by our own stream with fishes.. A few improvements could be made ie not enough towels for the hot tub, cleanliness, welcome pack to Inc bathroom things etc would nice as it is a luxury cottage."
