    About this property

This thatched cottage, steeped in history, offers a spacious interior and an attractive large landscaped garden.

This wonderful, detached, thatched cottage, with a separate annexe, offers an attractive large lawned landscaped garden and a spacious and tastefully styled interior. Conveniently located, set back from the main road leading from Salisbury, 9 miles or Ringwood, 5 miles. For keen walkers, this is the perfect location, situated directly opposite footpaths and within easy reach of the New Forest National Park, with many scenic walks and great for spotting local wildlife.
Dating back to the 1600s, this comfortable and spacious home is steeped in history. The famous local painter, Augustus John, resided here and he had a studio to show off his work, which became a popular stopping point for gentry travelling from London to the West Country. In later years, he became a renowned political spokesperson with many articles published in the Delphic Review, which was edited in Fordingbridge.
The main property comprises a large living room on the ground floor with an open fire, wet room/utility and kitchen/dining room with a range set within an inglenook bread oven, and original brick floor. There is a steep curved staircase to the master bedroom with high ceilings and original beams and an en-suite toilet. There is a separate staircase to the second bedroom, which is very spacious and has a double and single bed. The third bedroom is in a separate annexe adjacent to the house, which is above the garage, accessed by external steps; guests will find a double bed, sofabed (for alternative sleeping), and en-suite shower room with toilet.
This is a great touring base from which to visit the extensive attractions in the area. Nearby, the charming town of Fordingbridge has a host of shops, cafés and eateries, and the gentle flowing River Avon is also nearby. Rockbourne is good for fly fishing and there is coarse fishing at Fordingbridge. There is a water park with various water sports including windsurfing and boating close by.
Convenient for road links to the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, Stonehenge, Christchurch Harbour and the coast including Poole, Sandbanks and Bournmouth. Other attractions include Marwell Zoo, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Monkey World, Avon Heath Country Park and The New Forest Wildlife Park. Maritime Southampton and various other tourist attractions are within easy driving distance. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

"Yew Tree cottage has been done out very nicely and feels very homely from the minute to through the door. The stair case is a bit challenging, but having a enclosed WC in the room means that you don't have to keep going up and down the stairs. To be honest it all adds to the character. We only used the 2 main bedrooms in the cottage, so it was a bit of a trek downstairs to the use the toilet in the middle of the night, but we knew that before we arrived.Plenty of kitchen equipment and a huge aga so you could cook a big breakfast at the same time."

"Staying in this old cottage was really special for us. The stairs are steep, the floor is uneven and not everyything in the house was working, but that did not matter to us. The sleepingrooms are spacious and there was enough space for the four of us (i would not recommend it for more people!) and coming back from our daily trips soon felt like coming home. Yew Tree Cottage made our trip to south england something very special and we had wonderful holidays."

"Yew tree cottage was in a good location. Overall it was lovely bearing in mind the age of the property. One or two issues such as mould in the wet room, the kettle didn't work properly and spotlights in the kitchen not working. These are minor issues but should be put right taking into account the price of the property. On the plus side the garden was amazing and very dog friendly. I read in the visitors book the road was a negative but it didn't really bother us."

"Very, very noisy as on main road, dangerous to get out. No proper dog walks. The cottage itself beautiful but so let down by the cleanliness, it was disgusting. Owner had not taken on board any previous comments."

"Not a great location with 2 dogs as the road is so busy that they had to be take by car to find somewhere for their walks.the whole cottage was very tired and not perfectly cleaned on our arrival. The bedroom over the garage was extremely basically furnished with no tea and coffee making facilities, limited storage and bedside tables that were more suitable for the garden, very small, about 12" x 12" and wooden slatted! It could have also done with its own Hoover as to carry the one from the main cottage across the garden and up outside stairs was a little irritating. What we found most disappointing was that most of these comments had been made previously in the visitors book on numerous occasions and never acted on by the owner. Is the book ever read I wonder."

"Lovely cottage, great garden. Beautiful places to visit via car. The cottage is on a very busy road, cutting the hedges back or a mirror on the opposite side of the road might help exiting the property."

"This cottage is in a brilliant location and is very pretty period building. The garden is gorgeous. It was such a shame that it wasn’t as clean as we would have liked. We have spoken to the owner and hope that the cleaning problems have been rectified. We really enjoyed our stay and wish the owner well for the future."

"Overall we loved the quirkiness of the cottage and the garden was beautiful however we did have a few issues which we had intended to write about more formally. The main issue was with the bedroom above the garage. Our family moved out of there after one night due to scuttling noises in the under eaves cupboard. There are signs of rodents. Also there was often an unpleasant smell in the room which I presume was why there were air fresheners left for use. The main cottage was good however we needed to wash items before use. There is also a leak under the bathroom sink and the shower needs attention. The location is good although we hadn't appreciated how busy the road would be and care needs to be taken when pulling out the drive. Visibility isn't good."

"We enjoyed staying here Thank you, we like staying at other locations as to why we said no to staying here again. Knowing the neighbours cross the section is bit of a put off, not completely private. They may of used the back of the property the evening we came? Talking loudly as they went in. It’s a shame the main road is busy, had to get into the car to walk the dog. The larder was an issue to bumping our heads more then once on many occasions despite the sign saying “Mind your head” - we had a couple of little ones and the bedroom via the kitchen steps are a bit steep for them. Beautiful period cottage, very comfortable. Lovely back yard. Feeding the fish was a winner for all. Check bathroom in the house, a leak at the back of the sink? A tad expensive overall as why we gave it a 7. Would we recommend? Yes. Thank you."

"This is our third visit and we have always loved the cottage although this time there were several issues that upset us;After travelling for 3 hours looking forward to a cup of tea, there was no milk left! The front of the house garden is overgrown with high weeds and looks really untidy as you turn in to the driveThe first night could have been a disaster as on putting our dog out for its last toilet the dog from next door had managed to get through into the garden and approached us. The dogs ran off into the pitch darkness with a lot of noise and whelping. This could have been nasty and should not have happened . The next door neighbour was very apologetic but it really upset us and our dog!"

"Beautiful cottage, full of character. So homely and we’ll equipt. Well located to explore the new forest."

"Had a lovely stay at Yew Tree Cottage for husband's 60th birthday surprise. Very quaint and querky. Garden nice too. Convenient for the New Forest and exploring the area. All amenities available."
    Joanna ‐ 11 Apr 2018
"A delightfully quirky and cosy cottage. Much rain over the Easter weekend but we enjoyed jigsaw puzzles around the large kitchen table and games around the open fire."
    Emma ‐ 28 Mar 2018
"A great place to stay in the New Forest. This a lovely cottage and we had a fantastic holiday. However as you would expect for the age of the property, there are several low doorways so probably not the best place to stay for tall people. Also there are extremely steep steps up to the master bedroom. I would definitely stay again."
