This wonderful, detached, thatched cottage, with a separate annexe, offers an attractive large lawned landscaped garden and a spacious and tastefully styled interior. Conveniently located, set back from the main road leading from Salisbury, 9 miles or Ringwood, 5 miles. For keen walkers, this is the perfect location, situated directly opposite footpaths and within easy reach of the New Forest National Park, with many scenic walks and great for spotting local wildlife.
Dating back to the 1600s, this comfortable and spacious home is steeped in history. The famous local painter, Augustus John, resided here and he had a studio to show off his work, which became a popular stopping point for gentry travelling from London to the West Country. In later years, he became a renowned political spokesperson with many articles published in the Delphic Review, which was edited in Fordingbridge.
The main property comprises a large living room on the ground floor with an open fire, wet room/utility and kitchen/dining room with a range set within an inglenook bread oven, and original brick floor. There is a steep curved staircase to the master bedroom with high ceilings and original beams and an en-suite toilet. There is a separate staircase to the second bedroom, which is very spacious and has a double and single bed. The third bedroom is in a separate annexe adjacent to the house, which is above the garage, accessed by external steps; guests will find a double bed, sofabed (for alternative sleeping), and en-suite shower room with toilet.
This is a great touring base from which to visit the extensive attractions in the area. Nearby, the charming town of Fordingbridge has a host of shops, cafés and eateries, and the gentle flowing River Avon is also nearby. Rockbourne is good for fly fishing and there is coarse fishing at Fordingbridge. There is a water park with various water sports including windsurfing and boating close by.
Convenient for road links to the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, Stonehenge, Christchurch Harbour and the coast including Poole, Sandbanks and Bournmouth. Other attractions include Marwell Zoo, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Monkey World, Avon Heath Country Park and The New Forest Wildlife Park. Maritime Southampton and various other tourist attractions are within easy driving distance. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

"Yes cottage is warm and welcoming, but hard to find and very difficult to drive out of as on a fast and busy road . The beds are comfortable , but one bedroom has very steep little stairs that are slightly unnerving for people with larger feet! Had a lovely time here , very relaxing . In a good location for walking new forest and pubs in area very welcoming with good food, recommend the Fighting Cocks ...which is three miles away ."

"The cottage was very hard to find in the dark, the hedges are over grown and there is no lights at the entrance, and once you go pass it, it is a nightmare to turn round, the road is so busy you nearly get killed."

"We were a bit disappointed. Garden good and safe. Leaking shower in main bathroom. TV in annex only received BBC 1. We expected low ceilings and steep stairs in an old cottage, but if the description which came with the confirmation had been in the original ad. we would probably thought twice as I have mobility issues. Annex was best for me, but heavy rain on the roof was deafening one night. Felt cottage was a bit 'end of season' shabby. Access on foot was difficult due to heavy traffic, we did not want to drive all the time."

"this place is great for families as you can separate and have your own space in the evening, whilst the exiting from the property can be difficult this is more than made up for with the amenties and the surrounding area which is a little known part of the new forest and therefore quieter.there is a friendly dog next door who is a softie but rather large which is great as he deters unwelcome visitors if you are out."

"Lovely location and potentially a lovely cottage, however the experience was really brought down by the serious lack of cleanliness and general state of disrepair. There were also some health and safety concerns that need to be urgently addressed, these were discussed with the landlord when he had to be called out due to some ongoing concerns during our holiday."

"A lovely old listed thatched cottage which makes a cosy place to stay in the area. Well equipped with a super kitchen makes mealtimes feel relaxed and friendly. We liked the bedrooms - all of them including the garage one- and loved the garden which is dog friendly and 99% dog proof (watch out for behind the garage area!). Problem areas for some people would be one of the staircases and the option of some brighter lights would be good in the lounge for reading. The road can be noisy but it’s low hum and rumble - not overly intrusive even in the garden."

"Yew Tree Cottage worked out extremely well for our party of 6 adults and 2 dogs. It has 3 large bedrooms, with 2 double beds in one of them and we enjoyed the kitchen being large enough to have a big table which we could eat and socialise at. It has a large garden so the dogs could have a run. We greatly enjoyed our week there. We found the location, right next to the A338 less of an issue than we expected, but it's no good staying at Yew Tree Cottage if you can't tolerate traffic, in the same way that the staircases to the bed rooms are very steep, so fine for us but no good if you have small children or someone who can't manage stairs. Again it would be preferable if it were in Fordinbridge rather than a couple of miles out as it's too far to walk, but you're not going to find a marvellous, large thatched cottage with big garden in the middle of a town."

"Large cottage in good location and amenities. However cottage needs a refresh and deep clean. Dishwasher not working properly, tablet dispenser would not open as a capsule stuck in which we could not remove. Two stair cases, on very precarious. Wet room collected water around toilet and sink. Garden absolutely fabulous which the dogs enjoyed. Ample parking, however on a busy main road so be careful as you leave the cottage. Photo of staircase uploaded, not suitable for the less able."

"Nice property, garden and aspect. Major problem is property entrance is very narrow between high hedges which are up against the road.Firstly finding the property - 'land marks' are mis-leading: one of the 2 bus stops referred to has been hidden by the hedge: the wooden gates are open and not visible from the road. Instructions should say 'property is about 100 yards north of Fryern Court Road on the same side'. Best located using Google maps & searching for Yew Tree cottage.Secondly and more importantly, with the narrow entrance and high hedges up against the fast moving A338 (no pavements) it is very difficult to leave the property safely by car & pull out onto the road. The hedges need cutting back to give adequate visibility of the traffic on the road. Several comments about this are in the guest book in the cottage."

"Cottage very shabby, Not enough lighting that worked, Shower not very functional, cold water trickled out"
    DEBORAH ‐ 5 Jun 2019
"Although Yew Tree Cottage is on the whole comfortable and well equipped there were parts of the cottage that were not too clean and very tired looking. The kitchen was great gathering spot but some of the pans and baking trays need replacing. The lounge was comfortable but somewhat gloomy. The stairs to the annexe need attention before they rot away completely- the top 3 are very wobbly and do not feel safe. The garden was lovely and fully enclosed so safe for the dog. For us the biggest drawback was the proximity to such a busy main road. It made it noisy when trying to sleep as there is no double glazing and getting out in the mornings was not easy especially with the high bushes impeding your view. Overall might suit some but not for us."

"A very old quirky cottage! Lots of room, very low doorways, excellent kitchen, very well equipped, lovely garden. Not suitable for people who are not steady on their feet due to very steep stairs. Lovely room in the annex."

"We found the cottage to be really well equipped, very clean and a lovely place to stay for the weekend. The garden is beautiful and away from the road. The road is close and you can hear it but we didn't find it a problem. We loved the quirkiness of the cottage. The lock on the door is loose and just needs looking at. But we would definitely return if we were going that way again."

"Really lovely property. Loved the layout and quirkiness of it! Lovely big rooms, very comfy beds, big and we’ll equipped kitchen. Very thoughtful of the owner to provide milk, biscuits and wine - much appreciated. Just a couple of observations- the shower head is broken and the tiles in the shower have mould on them - not horrendous but noticeable. Some of the kitchen equipment was a bit grubby and needed cleaning before it could be used. The lock on the door needs some attention as it is very loose."

"We enjoyed our stay at Yew tree Cottage. The accommodation is quirky and comfortable. We had an issue with the heating, however, after guidance from the owner, all was fine. There were plenty of logs provided for the fire and the garden facilities were lovely for both adults and children. The only recommendation would be that it could have been a little cleaner, however, this didn't affect our stay."

"Yew Tree cottage has been done out very nicely and feels very homely from the minute to through the door. The stair case is a bit challenging, but having a enclosed WC in the room means that you don't have to keep going up and down the stairs. To be honest it all adds to the character. We only used the 2 main bedrooms in the cottage, so it was a bit of a trek downstairs to the use the toilet in the middle of the night, but we knew that before we arrived.Plenty of kitchen equipment and a huge aga so you could cook a big breakfast at the same time."
