Near Edale and the Peak District National Park, the charming village of Hathersage (or "Heathers Edge") may be found at the beginning of Hope Valley. Whether or not "Little John" (of Robin Hood legend) ever existed is up to you! The classic novel Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, may have been inspired by her 1845 visit to Hathersage vicarage. Despite its size, the village has a wide variety of stores, taverns, and restaurants, including a public, open-air heated swimming pool and a train station. It's an excellent base from which to explore the Peak District.
