Within the village itself is Gleaston Castle a medieval fortification built in the 14th Century as well as a 16th century water mill, why not stop here for excellent homemade food at Dusty Millar's cafe? Just down the road is a children's adventure playground and village green where you can play 'Poo Sticks' on the stream, orsports on the field, with lots of farmyard animals to see along the way, perfect for little ones! With the stunning Lake District National Park within 30 minutes’ drive, and the beautiful coastal area overlooking Morecambe Bay within 5 minutes’ drive, this superb location has a huge variety of walks and cycles available. The market town of Ulverston is a colourful destination with a regular calendar of festivals – from beer and music to flag and lantern processions, enjoy a saunter down the cobbled streets window shopping from a varied range of independent boutiques, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. Some highlights include Gillams an independent family run tea rooms since 1895 with one of the largest ranges of tea in the country, while the Chippy Bank is a local institution for traditional fish and chips, on the way home, why not treat yourself to homemade ice-cream at Cumbrian Cow, which is always a welcome treat on a sunny afternoon. Spend a family-fun day at the South Lakes Safari Zoo, home to over 1000 of the rarest animals with opportunities to walk amongst them, while two hidden medieval gems lie only a few miles away, the impressive gothic ruins of Furness Abbey, once the second richest monastery in the country and their huge castle on Piel Island, accessible by ferry and where eccentrically the pub landlord Steve is also the island’s official king. There’s also some spectacular beaches nearby, Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve is a rare place to spot Natterjack toads and the impressive sand dunes and golden sands look out onto the dominating mountains of the Lake District, the nearby Bardsea beach was recently featured in the Sunday Times as one of Britain’s best secret beaches and comes complete with sand, sea, rare salt march, ancient woodland, a stone circle and Roy’s ice cream van, another loacal institution.
