On the northwestern coast of England, Blackpool is well known for being a seaside town. Located 17 miles to the northwest of Preston, the town is on the Irish Sea between the Ribble and Wyre estuaries. Since the middle of the 18th century, when it was fashionable for Englishmen to visit the coast in the summer to improve their well-being, Blackpool has become a popular holiday destination. Donkey rides, fish-and-chip shops, theatres, and other attractions may all be found along Blackpool's seven-mile long sandy beach and promenade. Some notable attractions include the Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Illuminations, Pleasure Beach, Sandcastle Water Park, Winter Gardens, Blackpool Zoo, or take a ride on the first generation tramway, the only one still operating in the UK. While walkers and bird watchers will enjoy the rolling sand dunes of St Annes-on-Sea and the Ribble Estuary, which serves as a haven for more than 250,000 migrating birds that return each winter, the nearby seaside towns of Lytham and St Annes-on-Sea nestle along a picturesque stretch of coastline lined with pretty parks. The Royal Lytham & St Annes Old Links Golf Club, one of the host courses for the Open Championship, is the most notable of the seven golf courses in the area, which is recognised internationally for golf.
