Amble, a thriving port town at the mouth of the River Coquet, is a great base from which to explore the rest of Northumberland. Amble, once a hub for the boating industry, now boasts a marina, a harbour, sandy beaches, and coastal hikes to the Hauxley Bird Sanctuary and the Druridge Bay Country Park. The harbour wall is lined with large fishing boats that bring in a bounty of seafood, including fish, prawns, crabs, and lobsters. Fish can be purchased from a public market located on the harbor's edge, which is also used as a shellfish hatchery to replenish populations of lobster and other shellfish. Boat tours can be organised to visit the rspb reserve on Coquet Island, about a mile south of Amble, to see the abundant population of terns, puffins, and eider ducks. Nearby attractions include the picturesque coastal villages of Alnmouth and Craster, as well as a number of excellent beaches, as well as the historic towns of Alnwick, with its castle and award-winning gardens, and Warkworth, with its castle, and the National Trust properties of Wallington Hall and Cragside.
