About this property

Rock 1 mile, Embleton 3 miles. A charming early-18th century Northumbrian rural retreat, which adjoins the owners' tranquil farmhouse and garden in the scattered rural hamlet of Rock. Just 3 miles inland from beautiful bays at Embleton and Low Newton-by-the-Sea, Rock Mill Cottage has been sympathetically restored to provide tasteful, comfortable accommodation. Surrounded by spectacular wide open countryside, the location is idyllic - perfect for a relaxing break. Alnwick is just 6.5 miles to the west, whilst Lindisfarne on Holy Island lies proudly on the horizon some 24 miles to the north. With picture postcard beaches and good real ale pubs and restaurants in abundance (including the owners' favourite, The Ship Inn at Low Newton-by-the-Sea) this is a superb country holiday paradise! Note: This property is adjacent to Refs. 1786 and 29817, and together they can accommodate up to 12 people.

The pretty village of Embleton is ideal for exploring the Northumbrian Heritage Coast. It is served by four pubs, two of which serve food. Grey's Inn also has 3 open fires, making a winter pint a cosy experience. The Embleton Heritage Trails Project consists of 6 trails to help you explore the history and heritage of the village. The trails range from a short walk around Embleton to a six-mile trail that takes you into the tranquil countryside. On the yellow sand of Embleton Bay near the sand dunes is a large grey rock called 'Bathing Rock'. A little to the northwest of this is the famous 'Vanishing Rock' on which the name 'Andra Barton' is carved. Barton was a Scottish pirate, killed in a sea battle with the English in 1511. Embleton is also within easy reach of other local attractions, such as Alnwick Castle and Dunstanburgh's golf course.

There are many, many positives including the pristine kitchen and modern appliances. Pans, crockery etc are spotless; there are new rugs and bedding/towels are excellent quality. Welcome pack was lovely. Unfortunately the pictures on Sykes are outdated and reflect a newly renovated property. The reality is garden furniture that is mouldy and needs scraping, painting and generally cleaning to be useable. The decking needs jet washing and de- moulding, the rails need scraping and cleaning. All general maintenance that would make a big difference. The shower control is broken and needs a new control button. These are simple fixes but as the complex is currently for sale it just seems that standards have lapsed pre sale. The biggest issue for us that impacted negatively on our stay was the lack of warmth in the cottage. It is an old building but the storage/ radiator heating system is very inefficient as is the log burner. I’m sure this isn’t an issue in the warmer months but we could not get the cottage warm and the bedroom was like an ice box and thoroughly unpleasant to be in. There are a couple of throws in the lounge but it’s not my idea of a holiday to have to wrap up in a blanket to cope with the cold in the lounge. The wifi is not as advertised and is so slow to be virtually useless. The smart tv is dated with distorted picture quality and needs replacing. The unadopted private drive is very bumpy but you are warned in advance, however the massive dip/pothole half way down is quite frightening when it floods in heavy rain. Despite the faults we did have a nice holiday overall but it is not a property that we would wish to return to in it’s current state.

It's a pity the storage heaters were not turned on prior to arrival especially when we arrived a day later than booked. By day 3 the house was cosy .
