Dorothy Forster and her brother Tom originally lived in Bamburgh Castle, which had been owned by the Forster family from the 16th century. During the Jacobite Rebellion, Tom enlisted to fight for the Stuart cause and was captured and put in Newgate Goal, London. In a daring plan Dorothy disguised as a servant, travelled to London and using a duplicate key, helped her brother escape and he fled to France. Dorothy arranged for a coffin to be filled with sawdust and placed in the family vault at Bamburgh to outwit the authorities. After Tom’s death in 1738, his body was returned to England and laid to rest in St Aidan’s Church in Bamburgh, and Dorothy was buried alongside him.

What a beautiful little cottage in a fabulous location. Perfect short stroll into Alnwick where there’s great places to eat. Our beds were super comfortable. Well equipped kitchen, everything you need. Welcome basket a lovely treat! I’ve brought the homemade jam home with me as I’d not finished it! Great hosts, very helpful. We will certainly be returning one day, thank you.

Perfect location for all that Alnwick has to offer. Parking permit helps, with parking just round the corner. The cottage was very clean and comfortable with well stocked kitchen. Love the history of the place, especially the lovely dining table. Will definitely look to return.

What a wonderful location, absolutely perfect for walking into Alnwick. The accomodation itself was stunning and perfect for the four of us. The beds were really comfortable and we all had excellent night's sleep, ready to get up and go. The kitchen was well equipped and the food and drinks basket was a perfect touch. We brought our own flowers but found some already in a vase when we got there. An excellent touch. It was a pleasure to stay and we will definitely be back. Thankyou for making our 50th birthday celebration a luxury.
