The market town of Alnwick (within 9 miles) boasts Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Bailiffgate Museum, the theatre/cinema and plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants. For a beach day or a round of golf on the scenic golf course, head to nearby Alnmouth (13 miles) with lovely eateries and shops.
