Originally dating back to the 1600s as part of Mainsfield Farm, the barns, dairies, and hay stores have been transformed in a £1.2 million restoration, now offering five luxury holiday cottages – Wagtail, Swallow, Barn Owl, Peewit and Red Kite – collectively sleeping up to 22 guests.

Set within a secure gated development with private parking and daytime concierge service, the cottages provide a warm welcome. Guests are greeted at reception with their keys, cottage information and a thoughtful welcome pack including fluffy robes and slippers. Peewit Cottage is a stylish ground-floor retreat, designed with comfort in mind and fully pet-friendly. The open-plan living and dining area features a flicker-effect fire, smart TV and comfortable seating, while the modern, well-equipped kitchen has everything needed for a relaxed self-catering stay. Two double bedrooms with ample storage and a sleek bathroom with a walk-in double shower make this an inviting and practical space for couples, families or friends travelling with dogs. One of Peewit’s highlights is its private indoor spa suite with a bubbling hot tub, breakfast bar and robe hangers – the perfect place to unwind. The large doors can be opened to bring the outside in, while a thoughtful dog crate is provided so pets can rest safely while you soak. Outside, the shared courtyard patio offers tables and seating for both private moments and socialising, along with a pergola for sheltered relaxation. Guests also have access to a communal sauna and ice bath, available by arrangement, for a complete spa-style experience.

The surrounding countryside is perfect for walking and cycling, with the iconic C2C route passing nearby and plenty of bridleways and footpaths on the doorstep. Just a short drive away, Derwent Reservoir and Waterside Park offer sailing, fishing and family-friendly trails, while Derwent Manor Hotel and Spa is close by for dining or leisure facilities. There’s plenty to explore further afield, too. The historic city of Durham, Barnard Castle and Raby Castle are all within easy reach, while Beamish Open Air Museum is just 13 miles away.

Newcastle and Gateshead are only 18 miles away, offering shopping, dining and cultural attractions. Outdoor lovers will enjoy day trips to Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall, and the dramatic castles and unspoilt coastline of Northumberland, all under an hour’s drive. With a welcoming village pub just 30 yards from the cottages and the convenience of shops and supermarkets in Consett, three miles away, everything you need is close at hand.
