Scargill Castle offers a truly unique and memorable stay, blending historic charm with modern comforts in a peaceful rural setting. Guests consistently praise the characterful interiors, beautiful restoration, and tranquil location ideal for walkers and those seeking relaxation. The welcome hamper and thoughtful touches are frequently highlighted, and the property is especially popular with dog owners. While some mention steep spiral stairs and occasional maintenance or cleanliness issues, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, making it a special retreat for those able to manage its quirks.
Most guests found the property very clean and well-presented, with several specifically praising the cleanliness. However, a few reviews mention areas needing a deeper clean, such as the kitchen and windows, and occasional musty smells or maintenance issues.
The rural location is widely appreciated for its tranquillity, scenic countryside, and proximity to excellent walking areas. Some guests noted the presence of a working farm and associated smells, but most found the setting peaceful and ideal for a relaxing break.
Guests generally found the property comfortable, with cosy interiors, a comfortable bed, and effective heating. However, the steep spiral stairs and the bathroom's location on the ground floor posed challenges for some, particularly those with mobility issues.
The cottage is well-equipped, with a fully appointed kitchen, secure garden, and thoughtful extras like robes and art supplies. Some guests experienced minor maintenance issues (e.g., leaking shower, garden upkeep, or occasional drainage smells), but most found the facilities met or exceeded expectations.
The welcome hamper and extra touches, such as treats for dogs and robes, are frequently praised and add to the sense of hospitality. Please note that while many guests received generous hampers and thoughtful gifts, these are not guaranteed for every stay.
Scargill Castle nestles in the beautiful Teesdale landscape close to the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Built in 1560 on the site of an earlier medieval castle, now fully restored from a crumbling ruin into a delightful retreat for two.
Combining historic character with all the cosiness and comfort of the 21st century. Private parking leads through a gate into your own sheltered and enclosed courtyard gardens (perfect for visiting dogs), created from the old Tudor manor house.
From the garden, the arched entrance hall leads into a dining hall with long oak table; take a moment to admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago! From here you can wander into the sunny kitchen which overlooks the Tudor gardens.
The stone spiral stairs lead up to the living room with oak floors and a wood burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. Two deep set windows pierce the ancient thick walls and overlook the Tudor courtyard gardens to the east and the rolling landscape of Teesdale to the west. Further up the spiral staircase is the romantic bedroom with double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs. The rich colours reflect the Tudor love of golds, reds and rich greens which are highlighted with mood lighting enhancing the exposed timber beams above. Windows to east and west provide views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond.
Additional Information:
Sorry, no children or infants.
The historic building means that surfaces can be uneven and rooms are spread over 3 floors with the bedroom on the top floor and the bathroom on the ground floor.
The stone spiral staircase has uneven steps and low headroom. Stone floors to ground floor with underfloor heating, solid oak floors to first and second floors.
Well-behaved dogs welcome (small additional charge per dog). Dogs receive a welcome hamper, towels, a toy and two bowls are provided. There is an outside tap for hosing down muddy dogs.
The property is situated on the edge of a working farm so please keep your dogs under careful control when outside the castle grounds.

We loved our stay at Scargill Castle! Finding out about the history, discovering lovely walks and visiting Barnard Castle all added to the stay. Accommodation has everything you need and the high end complementary basket was a lovely touch, along with the home made cake. Highly recommend! Thank you.
