Snaptrip says

Foxdene Cottage is praised for its spacious accommodation, high standard renovation, and stunning location. Guests enjoy the beautiful views and peaceful setting, with some returning for multiple stays. The master bedroom and rural escape are particular highlights, though some guests mention issues with heating upon arrival and maintenance aspects.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The cottage generally impresses with its cleanliness, but some guests have noted areas where dust and a fusty smell were present, suggesting room for improvement in the cleaning routine.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquillity, offering a rural escape with lovely views and proximity to local attractions. However, some guests noted the narrow access roads and difficulty in finding the property.

Many guests find the cottage comfortable, especially the king-size bed and spacious rooms. However, there are comments about uncomfortable lounge seating and the need for better-quality furniture, which affects the comfort score.

Facilities are generally well-regarded, particularly the well-equipped kitchen and the layout. Nonetheless, issues with Wi-Fi, heating, hot water, and TV signal upon arrival have been noted, indicating a need for better maintenance and preparation for guest arrivals.

While some guests would have appreciated a welcome pack, there is no consistent mention of gifts or extra thoughtful touches provided by the hosts, so it is not possible to score this category.

About this property

Dating back to the 17th century, Foxdene Cottage is a magical retreat in an equally wonderful setting. Backing onto woodland and with views over the stunning Lyth Valley, this is paradise for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The property is beautifully decorated throughout and having two gorgeous bedrooms with private bathrooms it makes a superb choice for two couples sharing.

The cottage is positioned at the end of a long leafy driveway and is entered through a stable door leading into a slate floored hallway. The delightful kitchen is a real treat with its granite worktops, large Belfast sink and Rangemaster stove. In turn, it leads into the light and airy conservatory with access to the sun terrace. The sitting room manages to be both generous and cosy. Sublimely comfortable chairs and sofa are arranged around the feature fireplace with welcoming wood burning stove. The original oak beams have been carefully preserved, and a stylish dining area is somewhere guests will enjoy long, lively conversations over a delicious evening meal.

We have a Scandinavian Hot Tub for 6 people. Bathe in our large family tub and enjoy the calming experience whilst taking in stunning views towards Gummers How. We do not use any water treatment chemicals so it’s friendly to the environment and a kinder, softer bathing experience. We clean the tub and refill the tub every week and ask you to change the water each time you use it. The tub is wood fired and takes up to 3 hours to reach bathing temperature. Bags of Kiln dried logs are stored next to the tub at the cost of £10.00 per bag.

The Lyth Valley is somewhat of a hidden gem and lies to the east of Lake Windermere, and twenty five minutes from Bowness. The area is peppered with lovely local pubs, many serving top notch food and fine local ales. Worth a special mention are the Mason’s Arms at Strawberry Bank and The Punchbowl at Crosthwaite. Make the drive to Bowness and you will find plenty of entertainment. The quirky Royalty Cinema, Old Laundry Theatre, a wide range of bars and restaurants and supermarkets should you wish to fill the fridge with delicious local produce.

Underbarrow is a quiet, pretty Lakeland village close to the historic market town of Kendal and within reach of the wonderful Lake Windermere. The village has a pub and is ideally placed for exploring southern Lakeland and the Lake District National Park. Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall, both with fine gardens, are nearby, and Kendal has much to offer in terms of shopping and is quite lively culturally, thanks to the Brewery Arts Centre and the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum, which is widely recognised as one of the best in the region. Also worth a visit is the ruin of Kendal Castle, which was formerly the home of Katherine Parr, and there’s plenty to see and do with Grange-over-Sands, Cartmel, Ulverton, Bowness, Ambleside and even the Yorkshire Dales National Park within driving distance. Underbarrow is a lovely base for exploring the area.

We’ve not had a stay before where this has been the case, especially with a 4pm late arrival time. House was also very cold as no heating was on for arrival. Had some issues with hot water and not being able to get any after one person had a bath (even after following the rules about hot water and heating). Again a shame when the property has two baths and showers. Property stunning and clean and in the middle of nowhere which was exactly what we were after. Overall we had a great stay and would stay again.

The views over the fields are fabulous (and great fun to watch the sheep playing!). The Black Labrador pub nearby was excellent too, and a nice easy walk from the house. The dog and I had a wonderful week here!

Great facilities, wonderful hosts. Excellent walks right from the door step. Stayed with my 4 year old son, two dogs and mum. Enjoyed two long walks each day to tire the dogs out and then day trips to the Aquarian, South Lakes Safari and Peter Rabbit world - all circa 30mins drive. We took cages for our dogs and were glad we had as it was very muddy weather. The kitchen is a great area for dogs and socialising and we didn’t really use the living room (which was lovely but too nice for dogs). Would highly recommend this fabulous accommodation.
