Guests say

The Long Barn offers a peaceful rural retreat with beautiful countryside views and direct access to scenic walks. Guests consistently praise the property’s cleanliness, comfort, and well-equipped facilities, as well as the warm welcome from the owners. The cottage’s tranquil location is ideal for those seeking relaxation, though a car is recommended for exploring nearby villages and attractions. Thoughtful touches and attention to detail enhance the experience, making it a popular choice for return visits. Minor issues, such as occasional colder rooms or dated furnishings, are mentioned but do not detract from the overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Multiple reviews highlight the property as clean, spotless, and well-presented on arrival. Only one review mentions dated or less clean bedding and settees, but this is outweighed by the majority of positive comments.

The location is praised for its tranquillity, beautiful views, and proximity to walks. Guests note the remoteness, which is a positive for those seeking peace, though it requires a car for amenities and attractions.

Guests describe the cottage as comfortable, cosy, and warm, with underfloor heating and a wood-burner. One review notes a colder bedroom and another mentions dated furnishings, but overall comfort is highly rated.

The property is described as well-equipped, spacious, and finished to a high standard, with modern amenities and thoughtful conversion. Minor suggestions for improvement (e.g., hooks, door squeaks) are noted but do not significantly impact satisfaction.

Guests appreciate the warm welcome, local knowledge, and thoughtful touches such as local cheese and chutneys. Please note that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

The Long Barn is a traditional, semi-detached Lakeland stone barn conversion dating back to the mid 18th century, which has been sympathetically and stylishly converted while retaining a number of original features. The exposed stone walls, stunning beams, traditional multiple windows, antique furniture and multi-fuel burner are offset with the contemporary conveniences you’d expect, including an en-suite in the master bedroom and excellent quality soft furnishings. The owners have tried to think of every luxury feature including underfloor heating with individual thermostats in every room powered by the biomass boiler, outdoor tap for rinsing down the dog (or kids) after a muddy walk, drying room and even a battery point for charging your electric car!

Nestling in the Roughton Gill valley and surrounded by the beautiful Caldbeck Fells, there is plenty to do with walks and cycling on the Cumbria Way cycle route right outside the door. The popular and picturesque village of Caldbeck with traditional pubs and charming café next to a waterwheel is only three miles away. Or, why not go just slightly further to Hesket New Market where you can enjoy a pint brewed on site at the local inn, which is famous for being Britain’s first registered co-operatively owned pub. Keswick with its range of fantastic independent shops, eateries for every palate and museums is only 16 miles away. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

The Long Barn can be booked together with Branthwaite Stable (CC119146) and The Hayloft (UK12652) to accommodate up to 10 guests.

(Summer 2026.) Really nice barn conversion. If you want to ‘escape to the country’, this is very much in it. So for all but the most hardy of souls, a car is an essential for access. But if you're used to sparrows and pigeons in your (urban) garden, then the sight of wagtails and swallows in the yard from your dining table is a real treat. The property was clean and well-presented on arrival, but there was no tea/coffee/sugar/milk. So shop before arriving.A flight of steps leads up from the parking yard to the front door. (So bring ‘muscle’ or journey with more but smaller cases.) An ‘air lock’ hall helps keep the internal space comfortable in all weathers. The bedrooms, ensuite and bathroom are generously sized and practical. We missed a hook on the back of the bedroom door for our dressing gowns, and a couple of the doors needed attention to deal with some squeaks when closing, but these are minor things. The living/kitchen/dining accommodation is more basic/compact and makes the implicit assumption you've come to enjoy your waking hours in the outside world and may ‘eat out’ more than normal, which is reasonable in the context. But a 'wet' day may discourage leaving the warm and dry. In a remote location like this, streaming a film is (understandably) an impractical solution. If you still have any, bring DVD's with you to play on the (standard definition) TV as a contingency for such occasions. (Via a SCART era basic DVD player.) If you don’t have any DVD’s, then trawl your local charity shops before you come (or locally after you arrive) and curate a holiday collection for evenings and rainy days. The majority of places in the area you will likely want to visit will be to the south of you. Keswick is a (very scenic) half hour drive away and most other ‘Lakes’ places require you to travel either through Keswick or at least as far as Keswick to get there. Traveling to Cockermouth takes a little less time, Penrith a little more, Wigton around 20mins. All have supermarket options for those of us who shop that way. Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket have small village shops nearby for those who don’t. The pubs in both villages also serve decent pub food, but you will probably want to drive there and back.Simon, the property owner, was very easy to deal with on arrival and accommodated us charging our EV from the onsite post. He was happy to for us keep a record of our own usage and leave some cash on the dining room table to cover the (p/kWh) cost to him. So were we.We would happily consider a return visit.

The long barn was just what we needed. Nice and relaxing. A little bit far out but perfect if you want to get away from it all. Having said that there is a lovely village close by with a small shop, Cafes and a pub which serves food. A little bit further away is Wigton where you can get everything you need. We would definitely return in the future.
