Harriet’s Hideaway is one of the six Pine Vale cottages in Seldom Seen, converted from a former water driven saw mill, dating back to the 1700’s. Situated at the foot of the beautiful Seldom Seen ravine, right next to the mountain stream Coombe Beck, in the village of Thornthwaite, this compact mid-terraced holiday cottage with small kitchen/ dining area but good sized lounge and bedrooms lies just three miles west of Keswick, a truly idyllic location with views across to Skiddaw in one direction and the beginning of the Helvellyn range in the other. The cottage benefits from two double bedrooms and feels like the perfect home from home; additionally there is also a private bench outside the front to be able to sit and relax. The area is great for both walking and cycling and lies on the lower slopes of Whinlatter, with many forest trails and mountain bike tracks. There is a gallery and tea room 100 yards from the cottage (open throughout the year apart from January) and a shop, pubs and restaurants are one mile away in the village of Braithwaite. The vibrant market town of Keswick has a wealth of amenities, a total contrast to the peace and tranquillity at Harriet’s Hideaway. Note those with limited mobility may find the stairs a little steep.

This cottage was perfect for my needs - a weeks walking in the Lake District. The location is excellent to get to many areas easily and Keswick is a 10min drive. The property was as described - there was plenty of kitchen equipment for cooking meals, although I could have done with a lidded saute pan for mess free cooking! The fridge freezer was very spacious and the washing machine was useful. The kitchen also has small table and 4 chairs in it and with more than 2 adults I think it would be quite a squash to prepare, serve and eat meals in but it was fine for just me. The sitting room is spacious and comfortable, the wifi was excellent and I slept well in the front bedroom. The heating is controlled very easily with a hive system. Some times the hot water didn't seem hot enough but it wasn't a massive problem. There are 3 other holiday properties in the terrace - and the waste and recycling bin arrangements are a bit haphazard, there seemed to be waste in the recycling bins and vice versa - I'm sure it would help all guests if, collectively, things were more clearly labelled and explained! I reported 2 issues - a really dodgy tin opener and the slow draining bath, I hope these get followed up. All in all - I'd definitely consider staying in this cottage again.

This is probably the fourth time we have stayed here and have rebooked again for September. Well located for walks into whinlatter forest and great access for the north and northwest fells. Great bus route access down the road with fast links to Keswick Workington and Penrith. Cottage itself is cosy and comfortable with two large bedrooms, washing machine and bath is also a lovely touch. Smart tv with easy access to popular streaming apps. We are already looking forward to our trip In September
